I am playing in DADGAD but standard tuning works fine as well. The song is in F. I play it with a capo on the 3rd fret using D-A-G. Those three chords will do it. I hope that helps. 😊

I just found this song, it’s truly sad how the railway collapsed. I’m only 17, but I’ve been researching the NAR mostly due to the fact that I live along the Westlock Subdivision, about a 5 min drive to Dunvegan yard. I’ve become entrenched with NAR passion, and the more I find about it, both the sadder and happier I get. Thanks for singing this song with my favourite railway.

Thanks for listening! That is great you are taking an interest in the railways in your back yard. The stories of the railways are a pretty significant piece of the story of our country. All the best to you!

Awesome, I remember my Grandpa telling me when the NAR picked him and up and his moose up by Wiau lake by the Margie whistle stop. That had to be in the 30's or early 40's. He said the cars would sway on the track on the 7 mile muskeg. I atv'ed in there many years ago and also found the cross of Mr. Edwards by the lake named after him. He was an old NAR pioneer. Great memorial song, I love it.

@@shadowcoyotes Yes, it is so sad that so much history disappears with the old timers. I actually came across your song when researching the NAR Steam Locomotive No. 73 that is now restored and on display at the Alberta Railway Museum. I promised my wife that we will go see it next summer. Her now passed Dad was a railroader all his life and worked for a while for the NAR too.

Bravo pour ton interprétation bien sentie...ton père serait fier de toi. For those who don't know, here is what Antoine Gérin-Lajoie had to say about this tribute to the Patriots exiled to Bermuda and Australia following the 1837-38 rebellions in Québec..."I have written this song in 1842 while I was in colllege in Nicolet. I wrote it one night while in bed at the request of my friend Cyp (Cyprien) Pinard who wanted a song on the melody of <Par derrière chez ma tante>... This song was published in 1844 in the <Charivari canadien> under my initials (A.G.L.)"

For Roger and others interested in the full lyrics. It took some digging but, I found the originals. Over the years I have spliced the last two verses into one, leaving some lyrics behind. I don't own a copy of the original song and cannot actually remember the arrangement, but my recollection is that it was somewhat faster in tempo. Anyway, here are the original lyrics by John Leeder, copyright, 1981: Lyrics: They take the cars down to Calder Shops, Making repairs on the rolling stock; They come back all painted and spruced up and clean, But the N.A.R. diamond's no more to be seen. There's a brand new symbol on the side of each car, The fat white (I sing winding), noodle of the C.N.R.; A new day has dawned, and a sad one for me, For the Northern Alberta is history. And they're painting over the N.A.R. That worked so hard and travelled so far; Little by little and car by car, They're painting over the N.A.R. We were doing O.K. a year or so back, Minding our business, running in the black; The only line in the West, they say, That found itself able to pay it's own way. Then came the news that the line had been sold, Taken into the government fold; I guess we did too well for our own good, We can't turn back time' how I wish that we could. My dad worked the railway for forty-five years; That day that they sold her he came close to tears; The N.A. R. was his pride and joy; And I've been around her since I was a boy. The people all knew us the length of the track, Up through Lac LaBiche to McMurray and back; They knew who to talk to when they needed things done, And there always was time for a wee but of fun, But now the boss lives a long ways away, He's nothing to me but the name on my pay: He don't know the people in Conklin or Chard, He's never set foot in Dunvegan Yards; And now we're smothered with regulations, Piled up with forms and choked up with frustration; The prices are up and the traffic is down, And I'm starting to think about moving to town.

Good job! My late Dad was General Manager of the NAR from '64-until his death in '77. He brought it back to life. Moved the Offices out to Dunvegan. Had the big Storage Shed built. He lived and breathed Railway. Born in a Railway Station to his Station Agent Dad. When he passed the CNR took over and the railway collapsed.

Thank you for sharing. I love hearing all of these stories. It is fascinating to me to hear of a family history so similar to mine. My father was born in a railway station with a station agent father as well. I wonder how many others have a family history like this in Canada?
