Mine wasn't broken, just worn- so I rethreaded it under tension with some clamps to hold it for safety. But the winding idea came in very handy when I realized it wasn't tight enough. Very helpful.

DCP is worse. A pocket penetrometer can at least train / calibrate your tactile consistency descriptions.
