Mom used to make me a little Amish cream pie when she was baking other pies. So easy to make and beyond delicious! Her grandparents settled in PA in Amish country in the mid 1800's so I'm thinking that's where the recipe came from.

One year I planted basil pretty closely together around the whole raised beds of my tomatoes. No tomato worms but the basil was covered in Japanese beetles but not one on my tomatoes. I will be planting tons of marigolds and basil around the tomatoes and also the squash. I had given up on squash but now I'll give it another go.

Enjoyed the video sir. I just watched a video on those beds, or what I think you have. Consider painting them if you live in the South 'cause the metal will get ultra hot in the sun and it will affect the perimeter of the bed's soil too. Anyway, look forward to the next one.

DON'T squish the bugs in the garden!!! They release a pheromone that actually attracts more. Pick and drop into soapy water. Use duct tape wrapped around your fingers to remove the eggs easily. Apply nematodes in spring that eat the larvae in the soil and use BT spray that kills any eggs you may have missed that hatch. Encourage birds into your garden. Chickens if you have em are the best!

This makes sense! I have two butternut squash beds. One has a whole bunch of volunteer marigolds growing all over the bed. The other has no marigolds. I noticed squash bugs are only in the bed with no marigolds. Yup...time to move some marigolds to the other bed. Thank you

Squash plants that are under stress produce a scent that attracts squash bugs. Trim yellow leaves back to limit the smell.

You can see squash bug eggs underneath the leaves without having to crawl around and turning them over if you look for a shadow from above on a sunny day. The leaves are transparent enough to see a mass of eggs from above if they lay them in a tight cluster. I like to look early and late in the day to catch the east and west sun from both angles on the leaves. Then I lift the leaf and pull them off with masking tape wrapped around my finger and throw the tape in a sealed jar so they can’t hatch and survive. You could probably use a bright flashlight and do the same on a cloudy day. Turning all those leaves over is time consuming.

I always dead head my marigolds and reseed from the prior year’s flowers. The problem is they bloom too late to deter the squash bugs. Guess I’m going to have to pay out and by some plants …

I think the marigold act in the same manner that dill, cilantro and some other herbs work. They attract parasitic wasps and flys that lay their larva in the squash bugs and eat them from the inside out.

I am trying something new. I spray the adults and nymphs with soapy water as usual but now I also turn over every leaf I can find and dab some B-7000 super glue on every cluster I can find. So far they can’t seem to hatch. It doesn’t seem to destroy the leaves as much. I hate smushing eggs. I’m anxious to see how this turns out.

It works! I sprayed all the adults and nymphs with soapy water and killed them. The super glue hardened and the eggs couldnot hatch. I later found a group hiding under my butternut squash and killed them. Since two weeks ago I have only found one or two adults, no eggs. The old zucchini plants were too far gone so I have started new seedlings which are just about ready to transplant. Let you know how it goes.

Marigolds are the easiest seeds to save and grow in cell trays. Just be sure to start the the proper phermones. French is one of them.

Ok I'm not an expert as a matter of fact I'm only on year 3. might be just lucky but I'll share what I feel is reasons I feel I'm having issues. I have a basil or marigold plant at the base of nearly every tomato & squash plant. I've only found 1 horn worm in 3 years. I rarely get vine bores or squash bugs. I also keep all my plants pruned at the bottom to allow air flow and I keep a tidy garden. No rotting leaves. I use the foil wrap at the base of all my squash plants too. I've also read not to mulch near the squash stems because it's an invite for them. I mulch my tomato's only. Usually the soil is shaded under my squash plants anyway so I don't worry about it. My first season I had squash bugs and a couple vine bores. That's before I used marigolds and basil plants. However I sprinkled milkyspore around the soil in the spring where those plants were. Just an experiment. Maybe it helped.

How do you apply foil around the base of plants without impeding the growth?
@MichaelJosephJr934

It just doesn't. The foil isn't tight enough. I'm sure if you look it up on YT you'll find some demos.

In my very limited experience, I've found that as long as check the underside of the leaves regularly, scrape off any eggs with my thumbnail or knock off any babies that have already hatched (I think they have trouble finding their way back onto the plant and are vulnerable to predation), the plants survive well enough. But there is definitely something to be said about growing in a mixed planting, and I think next year I will try to interplant my squash with marigolds and basil thanks to this video!

You can pickle just about anything right? I mean, so lemon cucumbers are yellow and are round. So, they may be a bit big for your jar whole depending on the size. But spears or slices ..... also, just for the extra knowledge. Those are what I suggest to folks with cucumber tummy trouble. They are a bit easier for some folks.
