The family had to move away and the parents are buried in Barboursville Cemetery. I had read that the mother, Emma Jane Gorrell Mooring, suffered health issues and could not return. He is still among family in Mount Welcome Cemetery; hopefully she felt some consolation in that!

Haha. I only laugh because I have done it a hundred times and get the frustration. I just went back to add it to another book (Haunted Ohio Hiking Trails), so here are the directions directly from the newest book: "Hikers explore the Elliott homestead, cemetery, and the area of legends of a witch’s grave and a curse. Hikers park along Cable Line Road near the gate (41.130578, -81.121123). Do not block the entrance. Take the second marked trail to the right, D Loop Trail, which quickly intersects Machine Trail. At the junction of these two trails, if you go straight (D Loop) about 30 steps, you will see the location of the Elliott House to the left. This is one area with the stacked rocks that some believe is the Witch Grave. Watch for stinging nettle! Return to the latter intersection and turn left to follow Machine Loop Trail around the old property and the cemetery. Turn left on Yellow Trail. Once back on the road (looped), turn left and walk to the top of the small hill on the roadway, and there is a trail (41.129167, -81.126700) to the left leading to the old cemetery (41.129817, -81.127267)." You can also get the directions for this one and other haunted trails on: www.amazon.com/Haunted-Hiking-Trails-Ghost-Stories/dp/B0CHL9FLXK

I live a couple miles from that tunnel on the western side, I’ve walked through it many times at night with friends, there have been 2 or 3 times when stuff has happened that I can’t explain, mainly a shadow of someone or something that wasn’t there about 1/3 of the way through but for only a split second

That is downright frightening! I got a really weird vibe at about that area too. It was about the point during daylight that the dark just enveloped me. It wasn't just the dark, though. I believe you. There was something grayish that looked to me to be from the waist up and higher on the wall. At first, I thought it was somebody rock-climbing it to the ceiling. Then figured it was just my eyes getting used to the light. Crazy now that I hear your story!

Its a phenomenon called a gravity pull.
@LoneGhostWriter2 жыл бұрын
I had always just assumed gravity pulls were actually some magnetic force but now understand that they are optical illusions. "A gravity hill often referred to as a mystery hill, is a spot in the road where the layout of surrounding land and landmarks creates an optical illusion, making a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope." Ghostly or not, they are hard to wrap the mind around when staring at them!

David Paulides should do a story on this! 7 miles for a 4 year old child doesn’t add up!
@LoneGhostWriter2 жыл бұрын
It was actually about 3.5 miles from the school where he was last seen and to where the body was found, although the marker does say 7 miles. 7 miles would be up and back. It would not be completely unheard of for a 4-year-old child to walk that far in a pretty short time- Most people can hike about 3 miles in an hour. So even if he stopped often, Ottie could have hiked for 5-6 hours and gotten there. Although, I often wonder if there was not some "foul play."

Hey this is odd to say. But my grandma and I actually lived there for awhile about 13 years ago. I remember paranormal investigators coming out and everything but I can’t find any videos or evps or anything besides this video. Do you know where I could find them ? I would get the evps from my grandma but she recently passed..
@LoneGhostWriter2 жыл бұрын
That was my group that went there. I think you guys played cards in the kitchen when you weren't hanging around with us. I doubt that I still have the footage - it was 12 or 13 years ago. If I come across it, I will let you know, but that was probably 8 computers ago for me. That said, the place was probably one of the most active I've ever been in (and I've been to thousands). It was so active, in fact, that we checked the electricity in the building to make sure that it wasn't surging and causing hallucinations. I actually had old souls tell me their names, chat with me, and we were able to look them up in the nursing home archives. But you lived there, so you know--there was nothing really terrifying, just dead people still sticking around like it was still a nursing home in operation. I pulled up some info I had posted on my website back then on the internet archive: web.archive.org/web/20121127024109/www.hauntedhocking.com/Laurelville_Nursing_Home.htm

@@LoneGhostWriter Sadly the EVPs are lost on the Wayback Machine. I can't believe I even found this in the first place. My boyfriend is skeptical when it comes to the paranormal so I thought I would give it a try to find something lol. Thank you so much for the link! I have 3 very clear memories about living there. When my grandma and I got into an argument there was really loud banging right on my bedroom wall. The other one is my family and I were way up in the living room area and we heard 2 notes on the piano play way back in the nursing home area at the end of the hall. The last vivid memory I have is I was around 9 years old and I was scared because of everything that was going on so I went into my grandmas room and went to sleep in here bed with her, I remember waking up to something I just wasn't sure what woke me up. There was no fan, no air nothing moving in the house everything was still it was really eerie. I looked to my left and the ceiling fans strings started to like dance around each other kinda like something was playing with it or something. About a minute or so they just stopped. It wasn't like you just let it swing and eventually stop it just stopped like something grabbed it. Just felt like sharing a few of my experiences. Thank you again!

Hello, most articles I see said she was born in 1842 and she found a wounded soldier from the Civil War in 1862. But it said she disappeared a few years later so around 1864/65. I haven't come across an article talking about her living in the 1700's.
@LoneGhostWriter2 жыл бұрын
Her story centers around Isaac Meason's gristmill (built in late 1700s) where she took her grain. The early articles on Betty (1919- 1930s and including the Connellsville, Pennsylvania newspaper The Daily Courier, August 9, 1919, The Morning Herald in 1925, The Pittsburgh Press in 1923) stated the story was near the Revolutionary War. It was not until the 1970s that the story shifted to Civil War times, probably due to the popularity of Civil War movies during the mid-1900s. That is what is perpetuated and you probably see online. Here is another that firms it up from the book: History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania completed in 1882 digital.library.pitt.edu/islandora/object/pitt%3A00aft2784m/viewer#page/610/mode/2up
@Sleepyhollow772 жыл бұрын
@@LoneGhostWriter I spoked to the Friends of the Dunbar Historical Society and they stated it was Civil War times.
@LoneGhostWriter2 жыл бұрын
@@Sleepyhollow77 They may not be aware of the 1882 edition of "History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania" which clearly states that Meason's mill was built pre-1800 and also stated that it was this mill that Knox visited at this particular time. It is not uncommon for stories to change time periods to fit the needs of those who tell them (possibly someone interested in the Civil War era) and the local historic society probably received their information from articles in the 1970s. The book with the correct dates is in in the University of PIttsburgh collections, but can be visited at the above link. Regardless, it is an interesting story!
