I worked in pest control and after moving out of my rental my landlord told me they would need to charge 600$ of my deposit for flea treatments in my apartment because i owned a cat. I tried to argue that my cat had never had fleas while living there... they said it was standard... i told them that no company ive ever heard of charges that much to do a flea treatment in a vacant, unfurnished apartment with only 2 bedrooms. Still nothing... so i asked if i could have the treatment done through my company and provide receipts, the treatment plan, chemicals used etc. They said i could, so i spoke with my manager and had the treatment done completely for free, handed them everything. A week later they told me that they had their own pest control person go over everything, and they stated that my treatment was not thorough enough and that they would need to still fumigate the apartment and that i would not get my deposit back... The maintenance guy was their pest control guy, and he would put those air-fogging cans of raid in each room of an apartment to treat for pests... I knew this because i had seen the evidence of it when i first moved in during my early walkthrough, and i had watched them do it to a neighboring unit. I still dont know if that counts as fraud or how they can justify it, but after going back and fourth with them for several weeks i finally recieved the "remainder" of my deposit, a total of 300 some odd dollars out of a 2600$ deposit... We barely lived in that unit for more than 8 months, just my girlfriend at the time, my cat, and myself. We had next to no furniture and almost always ate out. No paint damage or anything, and the carpet was on its last leg when we first moved in. Never complained to have anything fixed, never late on rent, and only asked to break our lease after one of our neighbors (who frequently fought with his wife drunk and would come knocking on our door to hide out from her) shot a 357 magnum through his wall, nearly hitting our friend/her car while she was getting something from it during a visit, and then he ran from the police shouting "i didnt shoot her i swear" on his way out while we and all of our neighbors looked outside to see wtf had happened. Sometimes i wish i had the money at the time to sue them, because they were really shady landlords.

This is inevitably the guy who is completely detached from the business case of everything he does and just wants to "get on with his tasks", then wonders why he never gets promoted to roles that require balancing key business priorities 🙄

Spoiler: both of these are stupid No new hire is fully up and running after one day unless its such a simple job that its trivial to be so. A new leader who "gets leading asap" is a bad leader. You have to listen and learn before you can lead effectively. Everything about this video (and the comments...) lends towards why so many startups crash and burn.
