Haha is this where the crazy old prospector character who bursts out into a little jig came from? I swear I’ve seen that before. Maybe from an old cartoon or something

This is my favorite Western with Liberty Valance a close second. I wish Walter spent more time in Hollywood although he obviously learned a lot on Bway. Bogie & Huston are truly memorable in this fine film.

Howard is giving the labor theory of value. The capitalist Adam Smith, and the Communist Karl Marx both adopted the labor theory of value. But there's more to it. There's a matter of what catches people's fancy. People write best selling novels, and get rich. But most books don't sell very many copies. The difference isn't determined by how much labor went into them. There is the difference between skilled, and unskilled labor. There is good, and bad management, and entreprenurial activity.

Great monologue, but the thing that sticks with me is the response to it, that gold doesn’t change people, just reveals, and by the end of the film that’s just what’s happened.

This movie is the most perfect allegory of that famous quote by Henry Ford: “Money doesn't change men, it merely unmasks them. If a man is naturally selfish or arrogant or greedy, the money brings that out, that's all.” A timeless and still very relevant masterpiece!

A well deserved Oscar for this performance, Walter Huston, a Canadian, was one of the finest American actors of the 1930s and '40s. Although little remembered today. Huston (John's father) was a compelling performer in straight drama (Dodsworth is a standout) as well as quirky comedic roles, in particular The Devil and Daniel Webster. If you ever see his name associated with a film, buy it, rent it, watch it. you'll be glad you did.

Bogart and Western icon Holt are magnificent but Walter Huston gives one of the greatest performances ever filmed. Quiet and serene, and then dancing as he calls the men fools for not seeing the gold at their feet. The 'I know what Gold does the Men's souls' speech is simply one of the best monologues ever.
