What bothered me about the character Jane is that she thought she was the only one who suffered and was feeld bad in the world, and that wasn't the case, her parents were too, it was a difficult situation for the three of them, not just for her. . she attacked and treated his father badly all the time. And she was a person cold like ice 💔

It’s amazing how the weight of a movie’s message can shift, along with one’s perspective, over time… When I first saw American Beauty, I saw Janie as a stereotypical entitled little brat; 20-something years later, not only can I relate and empathize with her, but I finally see how similar her situation was with mine and of many others I know… the LOOK CLOSER tagline couldn’t have been more adequate for the film’s promotion…

When I first saw this, I recognized Carolyn immediately as my Mum. Mum flies off the handle like that when any of us tell the truth. "I HATE you! You spoilt brat!" As kids Mum kicked my brother's toys at him. Didn't happen to me but I lost respect for her when she got physical. Some days I really don't like my Mum and how she behaves, on other days I feel a lot of compassion for her. My Mum is self absorbed but it's important to remember everyone carries wounds. Carolyn has a lot of mental health issues she needs to deal with. So does my Mum. Women like my Mum and Carolyn don't need a lot. They are just little girls who never got attention, love or praise, so when they grew up craving perfection & status to prove to the world that they are lovable. It's quite sad. Doesn't excuse bad behaviour. Sometimes you gotta call them out, be kind and leave them to sort out their shit. Last year I had that discussion with my Mum - Mum was really ashamed and said she was getting help with her anger issues. In the end we're all just doing the best we can.

Even though the parents were disconnected from the daughter to varying degrees... the nerve of the daughter to talk to her parents like that... she REALLY had it coming. That slap (if she wasn't a total waste of a human being) would have woke her from her stupor of spoiled ignorance. Of course, I could see (if this had been made today) that the daughter would have simply become even worse and more entitled.
@captainhowlerwilson508
@captainhowlerwilson508 Жыл бұрын
Shut up. That slap was so undeserved. Jane wasn’t very entitled at all and only wanted emotional support from her parents and her mom was the actual spoiled entitled bitch who was so materialistic and thought that buying and giving stuff to her daughter would make her happy. The reality is too much of that does not make a child happy. I don't know what crap you were fed, but you have such a delusional take on this scene.

Unpopular opinion but it's true. I was really cheeky to my Dad growing up and I would say stuff to him like Jane did. He never hit me but damn he got angry and would throw a shoe to the same effect! Fair enough too. I look back and admit I had no right speaking to him like that. I own my actions but i tell you what I had a good teacher! My Mum used to berate my father in front of us and so I thought that behaviour was ok back then. When you're a kid you're only as good as the teachers you're given 🤷‍♀️ you get older & wiser to the fact though.

I think you missed the subtext in the dialogue. The mother is materialistic and is only concerned with her career and status. She has neglected her daughter and more importantly her husband. The reveal is that it is Carolyn, the mother who is the MOST ungrateful. The Real victims are Lester, the husband and then the daughter.

"What's wrong with a duplex?" That's the point of the scene. Carolyn (the mother) is all about status, while Jane is a typical teenager who is craving emotional support from parents who are too dysfunctional to provide it. When Jane calls her mom out on this, Carolyn responds by basically saying "how dare you ask for something from me when I've given you so many material things!"
