So I searched if something like this had happened and, it turns out in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, MI, a runner named Fred Lorz was suffering cramps and dropped out of the marathon after 9 miles. He took a cab back to the stadium while waving at fans and the other runners. The cab broke down at mile 20, so he just rejoined the race and took first place--until the Olympics heads got word of this, and he later admitted to it and was banned for six months (initially for life, but he later on put out a formal apology saying he had no intentions of defraud)
