so glad on this insights, it shows how the great Benin empire was the cradle to development in this region and how their progress directly or indirectly shape the people of this region... Oduduwa has a royal bloodline came to these lands and established the Oyo kingdom and other kingdoms in those lands, uniting the people to a single identity, which is the modern Yoruba though i see all this as a scheme for the British to marginalize the Edo people and ensure the dynasty and its people to rise to greatness again, giving benefits and rise to smaller tribes in and around its kingdom to ensure they put her down

One thing is clear, the name Yoruba is derived from the name Oyo which is the most significant empire among our various Oduduwa affiliated kingdoms of that era. We don't need to be worried or ashamed about this because even the name England was derived from one of the most prominent kingdoms called "Angles" in ancient Britain. The other tribes included the Jutes , Saxons and the Normans who came later. Don't let any anti-Yoruba individual tell you that it was derived from a derogatory Hausa word - meaning untrustworthy. They don't want us to be proud of our rich heritage. Yoruba and Hausa people have interacted for many years before the colonial era through trade and religion . Thus some of their people understood each others language . Some Yoruba still speak Hausa till date and vice-versa. Hence if the name Yoruba is a derogatory Hausa word, those that understood the Hausa language would have exposed and rejected it outrightly as an insulting word. We know some anti-Yoruba people who are recently spinning this misinformation and conspiracy theory about our noble name.

I appreciate the scholarliness of this work! Evidence is presented for every definite claim. Great! However, I think you should do more work on why the Hausas were calling the people by so-called "Yariba". Afterall, there is an argument that it was a corruption of a word that was being used by the people. Personally, I agree with Sigmund that the people should have been generally called AKÚ, instead of YORÙBÁ. Now, it is what it is. Meanwhile, kudos to Ajayi for his efforts and, perhaps, unexpected "victory."

So many take away. Most African tribes didn't have the time to band together under a common leadership or kingdom prior to colonialism. Hence they didn't always have or agree to a common name. Yet they are descendant of a common ancestry. Igbos in various parts of the south also fall under this category. Ijaws too and Ibibio... Hence the identity issues. I am glad the Yoruba nation solved this issue long ago, doesn't really matter who originally owned the name.

Yarba came from Malinke word for volunteers. OYO & IFE INDIGENES WENT to fight in Songhai Army in 14_ 15th Century as volunteers. Yoruba does not appear as prefix or Suffix in any Yoruba town or village to indicate tribal identity. A careful search in Ife where everyone agrees Yorubas originated reveals an identity for the earliest Yorubas who evolved in the bushes to settle in the earliest Yoruba settlement and called it Igbomokun or Ugbomokun which means Igbos or Ugbos of the forest of tigers. These Igbos or Ugbos were divided into 16 communities or clans with one clan being the earliest of the Igbos to arrive and settle at Ugbomokun or Igbomokun ( Ife). Igbo or Ugbo as an ancient identity makes historical, antropoligical , l parliolothic and environmental sense for bushman. In Bantu bush is Igboor. Furthermore , the oldest market in Africa is located in Ife( Ugbomokun or Igbomokun). The name is revealing; it is called Oja Ejiigbomokun; which means Market of the Igbos of the forest of tigers. There is overwhelming evidence that the ancient name of SW Nigeria people was Igbo or Ugbo which gave way to other nicknames such as" Yarba" ( Yoruba), Aku, Egba, Olukumi etc.

The modernist theory of Yoruba identity being colonial is false. Every source we have since before that era refered to all Yoruba they knew of as Yoruba. The name Yoruba is also based off the name of a Yoruba group, the Yagba. That was transliterated into Central Sudanic languages as the name of all Yoruba.

For those who feels original identity of Yoruba people was taken away, there is no identity that was taken away, all identities of people under the umbrella term Yoruba today remains intact. what was created was an umbrella identity which was never there, everyone goes by their individual identity and no umbrella identity and Yoruba only serves as umbrella identity

Good video. Perfect colonial tactic. Take an individual out of his environment. Break him by means of different tools including toture, abuse, gaslighting, rape and finally the love of Jesus Christ. When they have broken you sufficiently that you have become a mindless clone. They send you back to your people as a soldier for Christ/democracy whatever. And ofc Africans being sentimental creatures they fell for it and jettisoned their own values completely. And you wonder why we are disrespected everywhere we go. This Ajayi crowther was nothing but an agent of western colonialism. All his photos depict a seriously sad and abused man. According to “saint” Josephine Bakhita -If I were to meet those who kidnapped me, and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands. For, if these things had not happened, I would not have been a Christian and a religious today Ofc they made her a saint immediately, cos why not? Africans wake up from this foolishness.

Based and correct pilled. They only complain about it when the thing they removed was something that modern western morality(itself a derivative of Christianity) likes. When it is something that modern morality doesn't like they pretend like it never happened. Exposing themselves as people not against westernization but instead trying to further change Yoruba to look more like modern and post-modern westerners.

Because most of us held to high esteem documenting our past in oral and festival traditions. So the few written sources were mostly royal, many of which was destroyed during colonial conquest as royal capitals were raised when they resisted and the south resisted much harder than the north, so there's way more surviving northern stuff(also the north was literate for longer). Modern historians tend to (and for good reason) trust written sources more so the oral and festival stuff are often ignored but increasingly now, we also use oral and festival sources, so if you read more recent books, you'll see them also use our oral and festival traditions as sources.
