Funny thing is that in the book alicent was describe just like Cersei. She was loyal to her sons, they were her priority, she did not care if she had to turn into a monster to have them rule and see glory. Show alicent only cares about Rhaenrya and that is the core of the problem why the dance in the show doesn’t make any sense. In the book alicent was waiting for Viserys to died she already got Aegon his Lords and his support to go against Rhanerya and her side of that needed to be done. She even tried to settle for a split kingdom if that would guarantee that Aegon, Helaena, aemond and daeron would survive
