Mieko Kawakami is my favourite author too! I also want to read The Prayer for the Crown Shy because I loved the first one in that duology! I am also planning to give Rouge another try and pick it back up from my soft DNF pile! Glad to see that we have a good bit of overlap in the books that we like! Have a happy rest of your reading year! 😊

I had a great time catching up and hearing about what you have been reading this year! It has been awhile! I heard of Breast and Eggs through the Booktube Prize, I believe. I am so glad you enjoyed it! It is unfortunate that Tomb of Sand was a disappointment, and by the way, you do such a good job explaining what these books are about, even when I am not familiar with them. Depending on how it is explained, I would be curious to know about the food that was being offered at the buffet, but when it drags, I can understand that it could be burdensome. I want to say that I own The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and am quite familiar with it. I am definitely curious to check it out, though. I am curious about Circe. I read The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and I really did not like it. It felt like The Real Housewives where the Greek Gods were part of a petty reality show. Miller does have a great grasp of Ancient Greek history. I just wish she displayed it more to create a more solid story than one that is filled with melodrama. I need to get back into reading Khaled Hosseini and A Thousand Splendid Suns is going to be next. I loved The Kite Runner. It is one of my favorite books of all time. Mona Awad seems to be garnering a lot of hype. Bunny is becoming a cult classic and I despised that book. I need to read Fredrik Backman as well and am inclined to check out A Man Called Ove. The only author I read more than one book by is Jerry Craft and that is just because I read New Kid and Class Act. I often read standalones and they are often from different writers. If you count short works, then perhaps I will have read more. Thank you for sharing and I hope the rest of the year brings you more terrific reads! -Josh
@shinyswondrouslibraryАй бұрын
oh my goodness, thank you so much for watching...and for taking the time to comment, you're the best🫰🏼 also, I did think the writing in Tomb of Sand was beautiful at some points, and it IS a book written in a way that the reader is expected to follow along and relish the writing, the metaphors and that sort of thing even when the plot is not even in the back seat, the plot is not even in the car...the plot just stayed back home lol. I can see that aspect appealing to some readers, but unfortunately it got too pointless and repetitive for my enjoyment. Have you read it? If so, I want to know your thoughts. I haven't yet read Song of Achilles, but I'd say Circe is worth a shot, just to follow along Circes character. I haven't read The Kite Runner either and if it is anything like A Thousand Splendid Suns, I might have to take my time with it you know. I definitely want to get to reading it eventually. Bunny.... was something, it was so confusing but sort of in a fun way, overall a 3 star book. Though I didn't I get whatever deeper commentary the author was going for lol. I do think Shorter works count. If you like an author's writing, they can be your favourite author despite having read just one book from them....or maybe they're just an author you'd want to read more from you know. Anyway, hope you have a great day & the best time the rest of 2024🌻✨️

It's my pleasure! It is always a delight to watch and leave a comment, so that we can keep the conversation going! I can understand where it can get very aggravating when the writing is good, but there is absolutely no plot to the story. Some have been able to overcome a piece that was driven more by its writing than its plot, but when the plot is nonexistent and without reasonable explanation, then it does not sound like it is worth reading. I like your analogy about your take on the plot in Tomb of Sand, though! I did not read it. I would be willing to give Circe a chance, but I will have to see as to when. The Kite Runner is also set in Afghanistan, but it follows male characters and their circumstances rather than female characters. Some of the major themes include friendship, betrayal, and redemption. I actually watched the film first and loved it. I read the book and loved it even more, especially with what it had to offer. I gave Bunny 1 star. I knew what Mona Awad was looking to accomplish, but I hated the way in which she went about doing so. I could not stand The Bunnies and how they thought as one and in a cultish, cliquey kind of way. Ultimately, it was an allegory for what it is like to make your way through a capstone course in a Creative Writing MFA program. I would agree that shorter works could count, though I catalogue short works a bit differently and do not rank them at the end of the year. I will rate a complete collection, but am more inclined to collect as complete of a collection as possible. I agree with your methodology of falling in love with an author, even if it is just over one work, though it is worth proceeding cautiously. I loved Albert Camus' The Stranger, but did not care so much for anything else he has written. You enjoy your day as well and I hope the second half of 2024 is just as good or better than the first! -Josh
@shinyswondrouslibraryАй бұрын
yeah I guess it is risky to think of an author as a favorite from just one of their works. But I also think that there's a pretty high chance that when you click with a book to that extent, you're going to also like their other works you know also, I didn't know that there's a movie based on The Kite Runner, I definitely want to read it and watch the movie now that I know!
@LiteraryGladiatorsАй бұрын
I can go along with that methodology that clicking with one book would increase your chances of clicking with another. Yep, there is a movie based on The Kite Runner, but it is worth reading the book before you watch the film. The film is very faithful to the book, though, despite the fact it does have to cut parts of it out due to what they feel are necessary time constraints.

I am happy to see that you are really making your way into reading and it is especially true that just reading what you want and what interests you in the slightest can really help you get back on track with making it something you enjoy. It is never too late to read books written for younger readers. I actually bought a few Geronimo Stilton books and may get around to reading them myself. I just find it to be an interesting premise that I am curious to explore. I thought it was a clever idea to use your StoryGraph to answer the 10th question of this tag.
