Enjoyed the original off-Broadway show so many times at the Promenade, where Sonia stopped the show every night. I interviewed John Michael Tebelak for my Master's thesis while the two of us at on his bedroom floor in his parent's apartment on Central Park West. (We were all so young then!)

I'm with you, Robin. No way was it 42 miles of work, per person, every performance. Impossible. It had to be a total of everyone in the cast.

P & G can go suck a dick! If they don't want to be in the soap business, then sell the rights for a fortune! WTF are they doing? GL was my #1 favorite TV show (soap or not) period in my entire life. I was so saddened to see it end. SHAME SHAME SHAME!

Is Gilmer the only one that was actually in the movie version of it? Because really let’s be honest. The movie version is the one that majority of Americans know, because Broadway and its traveling companies only reach a fraction of the audience

In light of the Watergate Scandal, the ongoing Vietnam War and inflation, Americans needed to hear "good news" in the turbulent times of the early 1970's and "Godspell" fit the bill. On March 21, 1973 "Godspell" hit the silver screens across the country. In the area where I grew up, people were lining up and down the blocks surrounding the local movie theaters to see the movie. One theater even decided to schedule an additional morning and midnight showing because of the demand from the public. The movie's synopsis is taken from the Gospel of Saint Matthew. The movie utilizes the parables within the gospel of Matthew to tell the story of the "good news" via Jesus and his disciples in an engaging, non-threatening format through story and the musical score of composer Stephen Swartz. The musical score includes the iconic "Day by Day" sung by Robin Lamont along with David Haskell's "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord," Joanna Jonas's "Turn Back, O Man," Lynne Thigpen's "Bless the Lord," Victor Garber's "Alas for You," Merrell Jackson's "All Good Gifts, and Katie Henley's "By My Side." The movie was shot in its entirety on location within the New York City metropolitan area featuring such landmarks as The Brooklyn Bridge, Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, Andrew Carnegie Mansion, Times Square, Lincoln Center, and North Tower of the World Trade Center, Fifth Avenue, Cherry Lane Theater, Hell Gate Bridge and Randall's Island. Little did the producers of the movie know that its release would help to fuel the "Jesus People" and "Jesus Freak" movement during the early 70's. Jesus People and Freaks would go door to door handing out copies of "The Way" and "Good News for Modern Man" paperback Bibles. Our family was one of those whose lives were changed because of "Godspell" and the movement which followed it. As we move forward into the 21st Century with all of its turmoil and turbulence, there is still the need for "good news" and "Godspell" still fits the bill.

Love this! Rarely a day goes by that I don't at least listen to at least one of the songs on the soundtrack. Saw it live at Ford's Theatre in D.C. with my mother and sister I believe in 1975. I remember the cast dancing in the aisles and actually passing out small cups of wine (I think while singing "Light of the World")! Fast forward to 2005, my daughter was in a production of Godspell at her elementary school! God bless!

I had the great opportunity to hear the "original" ? cast when John Michael Tebelak brought the show to his hometown, Berea, Ohio. I had seen several shows he had directed as a community theater director earlier. I don't know the exact timing but it was not long after the show was first done! Thanks to all for the energy and contributions!!!!

This show literally helped to change my life way back in the 1970's. I have only recently rediscovered Godspell during the last couple years and to me the music, lyrics, and the gentle, kind, and slightly twisted retelling of the Book of Matthew is now more relevant than ever. I find myself returning to Godspell frequently for comfort these days. If I could I'd give each actor, musician, and writer involved in Godspell a million hugs!

Thank God for Godspell! Ever since I first saw the movie, I have loved this piece. By My Side and Beautiful City are among the most beautiful songs ever. I've been blessed to read Carol DeGuire's book, and such a love comes through reading it from The Scotch And Soda Club to Cafe LeMama and beyond. God bless Godspell and all who wrote, performed and did anything for it. This musical is a happy place for me. This was part of my road to meeting Jesus Christ and asking Him into my heart.

I joined a church folk group on Long Island in 1976 at 9 years old. What drew me to it was the songs they played from Godspell. The music still has an emotional attachment for me. And I'm lucky to call Rick Shutter a friend, & he has shared many stories with me. Thank you & Happy 50 years!

Thank you for sharing this! I think Vicki's wonderful. Totally fell in love with her as EVERY QUEEN in Six and I feel so lucky that I saw her first Carole show on the Beautiful tour in Bromley. She's such an engaging presence on stage as well as being the sweetest person to meet, she has so much time for her fans. Her positivity and light has been amazing during this quarentine. This put a bit smile on my face.
