Today is 11/19/24 and Ukraine has just launched U.S. long range missiles 300 miles into Russia. Putin has changed Russia's Nuclear Doctrine to first use strike and has threaten nuclear war before Christmas. Biden has two months before Trump is sworn in and World War Three would give him the emergency powers he needs to stay in office. Am I worried? Naw, I writing this comment sitting in Daddy's dugout he built in our backyard long before I was born. I'm with a cool blonde and we're drinking Grolsch (we have cases) and dancing to the sounds of the Dave Brubeck Quartet on our HiFi. Enjoy the New Frontier, folks. Over and out.

Steely Dan is THEEE most complex easy listening, music with meaning AND a groove in the ENTIRE rock realm! There's simply no one else like them! Even the NAME Steely Dan is sublimely wicked! How many don't have a clue 😅

I loved this song since I saw it on MTV in 1982 in my early HS days. When my sons were much younger 4 & 8, I’d play this song on my MP 3 player while watching them play soccer drinking in the sunshine and just enjoying that time of life. Now they’re much older now and this song is on my Spotify list. I remember them and I remember the young kid glued to the tv watching the real MTV.

Love Fagen's mention of Brubeck here ... I was born in 1956, and grew up for the first few years hearing Dave's music played by my parents back then. Part of the soundtrack of my life since. Fagen - with or without Becker - one of the contemporary geniuses even now some 40 to 50 years after most of their best work. It's timeless and brilliant, something that is lost when they performed live (similar to the Beatles after 1964). The Dan made sure they got the best studio musicians they could find (such as Larry Carlton) and that was key - never a wasted note, driven by an overall sense of vision.

I was in the 8th grade when this song came out, saw this video on MTV and I'm still enthralled, not with just nostalgia but with it's unique, captivating, and just such fluid sound... will never ever get tired of listening to this masterpiece!!

Yes we're gonna have a wingding A summer smoker underground It's just a dugout that my dad built In case the reds decide to push the button down We've got provisions and lots of beer The keyword is survival on the new frontier Introduce me to that big blonde She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld She's wearing Ambush and a French twist She's got us wild and she can tell She loves to limbo, that much is clear She's got the right dynamic for the new frontier Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city 'Til I finally make up my mind To learn design and study overseas Do you have a steady boyfriend Cause honey I've been watching you I hear you're mad about Brubeck I like your eyes, I like him too He's an artist, a pioneer We've got to have some music on the new frontier Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city 'Til I finally make up my mind To learn design and study overseas Let's pretend that it's the real thing And stay together all night long And when I really get to know you We'll open up the doors and climb into the dawn Confess your passion, your secret fear Prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier

There’s the zeitgeist of the tune’s theme and yet another of the album itself; which travels with the listener to whenever they hear it for the first time. The transition from vinyl to CD said there were fewer initial releases about at it’s leading edge so “The Nightfly” came to me with newness of instant, laser precision and digital recording and well away from the biggest UK hitter at the time, “Money For Nothing”. So glad I spent wisely on this platter of delights.
