I am still not convinced that an elk cannot differentiate bright colors. I understand that they do not see like us. But bringing a color or pattern into their environment that is not natural to their environment is where i see the problem. They have lived in that terrain their entire life, i would imagine they can see something that doesn't belong. Just my thought process though.

GREAT VIDEO! When I tried my first DIY solo rifle elk hunt in Idaho, I had a rude awakening. Idaho mountain weather is no joke. There's a reason why guides use canvas hot tents, cots and -40 degree sleeping bags in their gear. I had to rethink my whole Whitetail hunting strategy and relearn how to hunt really big game.

Man I don’t think I could ride that trail on a mule or horse that was a crazy trail!! You guys are some badass dudes. There is nothing like a good ol backcountry hunting guide service you guys really are a special breed. One thing I will say is I’ve been listening to some biologists that actually think it doesn’t help with lions how we kill all the big males. They believe the big males kill a lot of smaller cats and will even kill litters of kittens. Keeping the older males helps keep the numbers down. Who really knows. I would want to get rid of the wolves more than anything

Hunting wolves over bait is only allowed on private property in idaho, where are you finding private property in your outfitting area in the frank church to hunt over bait?
@MileHighOutfitters
@MileHighOutfitters 7 ай бұрын
You are almost correct. As long as you hold a trapper's license and the proper permits, you can hunt over bait for an unrestrained wolf. You should talk to the Idaho Fish and Game if you are unsure of how the rules apply because it is complicated; but it is legal.
@donkrider9666
@donkrider9666 7 ай бұрын
@@MileHighOutfitters I know the rules, you currently need general trapper ed, wolf trapper ed, shooting hour exemption if you intend to shoot wolves after hours in a unit that allows expanded methods, wolf trapping season is open, and you are actively trapping the spot. You cannot hunt over a bait that does not have traps placed. In the video you mentioned none of this and implied you could hunt over bait. Didn’t want the general public to think you could just throw out baits and hunt over them.

Great job getting out there and doing the hard work to help keep wolf numbers in check. As a trapper here in N. Idaho I know how hard it is and was fortunate to get a 90 lb male this January. For 15 years I hunted Beaver, Knapp and Asher creek with great experiences and meat in the freezer. After the wolves the elk numbers dropped to next to nothing. Thanks to predator management they are slowly coming back. I don't hate wolves, they are only being wolves but we need to keep their numbers in check.

How long should lash rope be please ?

Our lash ropes are 54 feet. Our lash ropes are longer than most packers so we can top pack using the Middle Fork Diamond.

We do not use pack boxes. We consider the basket hitch with a crow's foot to be a box hitch for packers that do not use pack boxes.

I'm asking for honesty curiosity, but is there a reason why the tail is under the britchen?
@MileHighOutfitters

No, Travis had just put the saddle on to show how to tie a barrel hitch. As soon as the mule starts moving around the tail will come out.

At what dimension of your load do you decide to switch from a basket hitch to a barrel hitch? Do you have a rule of thumb, like anything over 3 feet gets a barrel hitch vs a basket?
@MileHighOutfitters
@MileHighOutfitters 3 жыл бұрын
No, I don't have a rule of thumb when to switch over. After so many years of packing I prefer the barrel hitch. Twenty years ago we packed 50# grain bags as basket hitch. Now we flip them sideways and do a barrel hitch.
