Still my fav dark souls. I feel like having advantage isn't that fun. I have beaten Kalameth at first attempt. And even with that DS2 feels kinda easy excepting for some areas.

14:01 I think presentation is the biggest factor here. In DS2, it's a line slowly creeping down your hp bar that just stops your HP from going up as you die. You can even see the rest of your hp bar just empty. Whereas is in DS3 that health you lose, also takes its segment of the bar with it when its gone. As you said, these are functionally the exact same thing. However, how it's presented in DS2 gives the illusion of it being more unfair because you can visually see the line prevent your hp from going to the max and it slowly creeping up the more you die. Pressing matters in how something is perceived. If you're presented with two burgers. One from a 3 Michelin star restaurant that looks immaculate, and one a ripped up cereal box from a food truck that's lopsided. Which one would you assume tastes better? Probably the 3 Michelin star one, even if they were made the same day, by the same chef, with the same ingredients. Long winded comment about something pointless aside, the presentation of a mechanic is the foundation of how it's going to be perceived. The same mechanic perceived as bonus health going away is going to be perceived as more fair than if it was presented as losing some of your max hp.

This is something I've believed in & experienced first hand, while transitioning down from DS2 to DS1 gameplay, it felt like old/retro controls. I noticed the roll difference right away & could again reaffirmed DS2 was a better game. Not everyone likes it, but I like it way more than DS1

I frankly don't know how anyone can look at DS2's movement mechanics and think "it's just different bro you just gotta learn it <3" My brother in Christ no. I platinumed scholar and have played the OG many times since launch and no matter how you slice it, having a 360 degree stick and not moving the character in 360 degrees in turn is disgusting game feel. "Oh you can just move the camera" - bro I shouldn't need to move the camera to adjust my movement when almost every other console game in existence can do it right. There are a lot of reasons to want to free cam and adjusting my walking direction should never be one of them. I may like DS2 but pretending it's issues are not real issues or even worse a "skill issue" isn't going to win anyone over.

DS2 Health Penalty is fine, you basically get enough human effigies to actually regain humanity for the entire game and with the number of random invasions, you get bonuses as long as you just keep exploring. The only reason you won't have effigies is if you keep using it every first chance of hollowing. You don't really need that, I'd argue you should only ever use it if you want to go to a boss fight with summons, or if the health penalty is hurting you personally. If it gets to around 20% penalty then it's safe to say that effigies should be used, but otherwise - it's not necessary. Also leveling in DS2 is super easy and with an investment of at least 30 Vigor you can actually just survive most fights. Go for as much as you need though.

DS2 is great, not DS1/3 great. Touching a wall instead of hitting is my biggest gripe hahaha. Felt a bit clunky with the inputs but maybe that's just my machine. Had the most gravity deaths compared to any souls game too.

For me the problem is how the game is balanced around hp, DS3 is balanced around non ember hp, bosses dont one shot you unless thats the point of the attack like midirs laser, but in ds2 its balanced around human hp, as one shots become way more common even for regular attacks, at leadt human effigies are easy to farm

If you go into Dark Souls 2 with the expectation of a new and experimental take on the original concept, you'll be pleased. If you go in expecting more of the same from DS1, you will be disappointed.

Why did you fail to mention that DS2 also only has 8 directions when you’re not even locked on? It feels terrible to play.

Final Stage: NO LOCK ON! OP in every game. But specially Bloodborne. I swear, Rolling>>>>>>Dashing. Specially because bosses weren’t made for it. No Lock On Ludwig phase 2 is a JOKE! Easiest No Hit of my life!

Just a quick reminder that the 'infamous' 8 directional movement of DS2 is a standard industry practice in many games back then and is still used today. DS1 and 3 are actually the ones that standout here with their 360 movement.

Bro, Malenia’s sword has a hit box much wider than the pursuer’s, while the visual model of her weapon is much leaner than his. Idk if you used these bosses as just an example, but you are not correct on that matter. Dark souls 2’s weapon hitboxes have basically the same proportions as the models they represent both for players and enemies, while Elden ring has much larger hit boxes than the models you see in your screen.

No sorry, DS2 system is stupid and not ergonomic or intuitive. It looks and feels like a bug. When I "lock on" I am not expecting the game letting me hit away from the target I am locked on to, it is absolutly stupid as a system and even more so when nothing tells you it's an intended system in the game.

I still would have preferred attacks to be aimed at the lock-on target. That's literally the entire point of locking on in video games, we didn't have to reinvent the wheel there. I still don't like that about later entries. The free movement, however, was an excellent change. (Learning to fight without locking on in the first place is an alternative way to achieve mastery of the system, and doesn't require the developer to rework lock-on mechanics, for the record. DS1 was a simpler game in many ways, but *even in Elden Ring,* a good player knows when to switch between the two.)

I love ds2, however the first pvp encounter I had went something like this: enemy rushes me, I'm moving away backwards while locked on when suddenly, out of nowhere, BACKSTAB. I think ok, must have been lag and then it happened again. And again. And it can't be lag because all other hits and dodges work as you'd expect. So I concluded that when I'm locked on and walking backwards it must be that the game isn't communicating this information correctly and the enemy sees me with my back turned to them. And before anyone asks, no I wasn't being parried I know what that looks like too, that's fair, what happened to me was pure bullshit and I never touched the multiplayer after this

Mastering it is not worth it. Hitting enemies in Ds2 has no weight, hitting a boss with a broadsword feels like poking it with a toothpick.

The one thing that angers me is that you know people didn't like the fact that the direction input affects the weapon direction despite being locked-on. But you say that "if you put in the effort you might love it." Not everyone uses Great Swords. Aside from that, you sometimes need roll and immediately attack, which always misses. Fighting humanoid is difficult because they move and great swords with low area will miss. DS3 fixes this by making manual attack an option. This is why I tend to dislike DS2 apologists. They won't outright say that DS2 has flaws but they will tell you that it's actually a good feature.

I think a lot of the criticism of DS2 is warranted and yeah it's probably the worst souls like from has made but it's not a bad game and it gets WAYYYYY too much hate if for no other reason then it just isn't really notable enough. It's not a masterpiece but the way people talk about it you'd think its devoid of fun and horrible when it's just above average and being compared to masterpieces.
