Not an owner but have recently turned my thoughts toward a potential purchase (unfortunately undecided during recent Prime days). Frankly I considered the Scribe a bit gimmicky when it first came out. But your review helped to allay that quite a bit. I’m not a writer either, but I appreciate your review as a writer that would talk up the Scribe’s functionality in a bit more depth from that point of view. As you, having been in the Kindle world for a while, the advantage of mixing a Kindle with handwriting capabilities added is appealing. Whether I can justify the $$ versus just sticking with my Paperwhite is the mental jumble going on in my mind. Perhaps there will be more enticing prices in the Fall that will tip the scales. In the meantime, reviews like yours are very helpful. Thank-you.

Thank you for such a thorough review. I'm a social worker, and my job consists of interviewing parents and writing reports. I was torn between the Kindle Scribe and the reMarkable 2, but after reading reviews about the latter, I opted for the Kindle. Your review influenced my decision. I placed the order today and can't wait to start using it.

I cant express how mortified and downright resentful of the baligerance of Amazon to exciude the facility to use an external keyboard. Why??! How can they hate their customers this much

I suspect it has less to do with hating us and more to do with their calculations about cost vs benefit for adding a feature like Bluetooth. Still, I definitely agree it would be great to have

Excellent review. It's one of the only reviews based on really using the Scribe. I've been using the Scribe for a year. You nailed the exact changes I would like to see made. I would like to see quick switching between notebooks and books. This could be accomplished by putting "Your Recent Item" from the Home page into a menu available everywhere. We can now have multiple templates in a notebook! Thanks for the thoughtful review.

Having multiple templates within one notebook has been great! And gives me hope they’ll co time to improve the software over time. I agree that just a simple “recently viewed” menu would go a long, long way

The only problem I have, and this is more a problem with KZbin Search, I did a search for "Android writing apps for novels". I really don't understand why your video came up. As you are talking more about writing software for Windows and maybe Mac's. You never did mention an Android app.

I agree with almost everything you said. I LOVE my Scribe. I’ve only had it a few weeks. But it is what I expected, and a better price point. I completely agree and wish navigation between books & notebooks were easier, split screen is ideal. I also wish I could write in the margins of my ebooks and not have to create a sticky note. Also, as you mention, searchable notebooks would be awesome. I like that i Can have folders and sub folders in the notebook, I wish I had a nested menu instead of clicking through the folders. I love the feel and responsiveness of the writing🎉

I've been using Novelpad for close to a year, and I really like it. I've never owned Scrivener, but I have several friends who do, so I've played around on it. I do like it, but it's not intuitive. I was hesitant on Novelpad b/c I thought it would be the same as Scrivener, but I loved using it during the free trial and so I signed up for the monthly subscription.

Heads up, they just released an update allowing you to finally select a template for a single page in a notebook, woo!! Separately, I have the reMarkable2 with the Book Folio and the Scribe with the Amazon case and I have to say the vertical opening is actually so useful to stand it up, or raise it up and the quality/feel otherwise is as just good as the far more expensive reMarkable2 case. I tried a few third party cases on both and they are all a lot bulkier or feel much cheaper, the first party cases are really the best.

Whaaaaat? That’s awesome! And yeah I tried a third party case which feels sturdier but I found I’ve gotten used to the vertical flip and miss it when I’m at a desk or table. Thanks for the comment!

It’s not uncommon for people online to have no idea what they’re talking about in terms of Snow White as a film. Completely missing the themes, cultural context and subtext & just saying whatever comes to mind. It sucks that the only complex villain the studio ever made is fantastically thrown under the bus for silly reasons.

Unfortunately Kickstarter has bypassed Africa. No Kickstarter in South Africa for some reason. We do have Indiegogo and Unbound though. As a country and a Continent, we are good enough for them, but unfortunately not good enough for Kickstarter. I really can't tell you why that is. Kickstarter and Deepl (translation software) are the only tech companies, I'm aware of that simply bypasses South Africa as a market.

Nice video. What about Write it Now 6 though? It is comparable to the $ of Scrivener, a one time purchase, they update it, and it is very intuitive (unlike Scrivener). One can export in multiple formats, take snapshots, build character templates, create story boards, front/back matter, events, locations, props, notes, etc. and it is all extrememly simple (tabs at the top show it all). I bought Scrivener recently (but haven't tried Living Writer as I don't want another monthly fee...have that with AutoCrit thank you very much) and WiN is leaps and bounds above with so many options. However, I don't hear much of WiN. I bought Scrivener because I heard it all over and had to try it. No, I don't work or get paid by WiN. I'm just a 52 year old who likes to write and wants a program that does complex thing simply and with WiN 6, I have that.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THE WAY YOU EXPLAIN HOW DIFFERENT TABLETS DO DIFFERENT THINGS, OR HAVE DIFFERENT FEATURES; AND HOW IT IS UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL AS TO WHAT TABLET WOULD BE THE BEST FOR THEM. I ALSO LIKE HOW YOU USE YOURSELF AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU USE YOUR TABLET, AND HOW YOU USE YOUR TABLET ACCORDING TO HOW YOUR BRAIN IS WIRED, AS A WRITER... YOUR VIDEO IS VERY THOUROUGH, AND I ENJOYED WATCHING IT.

I never trust online subscriptions. I hate that everything is subscription based now. Because If I dont have access to the internet or the network/website is being Buggy youre at a loss. I do not recommend subscription based programs for anything!! Once you decide you dont want it anymore bye bye! That happened to me when i signed up for apple music I had ALOT of specific playlists with loads of songs but I had to cut the subscription off for about 3-4 months and when i signed back up ALL my playlists were gone!!! I resented apple ever since and will NEVER sign up for apple music again! Thats just a scenario that gave me a bitterness for online subscription services.

There aren't any serious program that don't come with the need to learn how to use them. Simple. All of them have a requirement to understand how they work and where the features are and how to use those features. This should not be a criterion for rejection. You just need to put your head into it, and learn the concept, because Scrivener is also a concept and an architecture for writing a book. I have had to learn my companies' business applications, which never were user's friendly. To me, a software that you lose access to the moment you stop renting it, is a non-starter! In 12 months, you have purchased several licenses of Scrivener. I see that Atticus is also a one time purchase, but is that steep price justified compared to Scrivener? what does it do better, if anything? being web based is not! I own the Affinity suite, photo, designer, publisher, and it does not bother me a bit that it is not web based.

I have the kindle scribe and I love it, the pages issue you seem to have it minimal. You can make a folder and have separate pages in that folder very well organized you just haven't seemed to organize it good. I just hope that the kindle has an update for a keyboard and mouse. I don't like my handwriting that much and typing notes would look much more professional.

As a keen reader and writer I have to confess, I love paper. Although the Scribe looks promising to me, there are some hard facts: the flash memory used in the device has expected lifetime 6-7y, max 10y. The battery the half of it and is not replacable. The hardcopy book will last for centuries. It is sometimes funny how the mankind tries to simulate the simple reality but the hard way. Years of development on Kindle devices and still it is not 100% to reading books and writing on paper notebook. The wishlist for future release is full of new functions, which are dead easy on paper. I think I will rather invest in good OCR and stay on paper.

I’d like to be able to move PDF’s that I added to the device (which are in my library) and have them in a folder which can’t be done at this time. I went for the Scribe because I can read my Kindle books on it which isn’t possible on the Remarkable 2, unless you want to jump multiple hoops to strip the DRM off the Kindle books. For what I use the Scribe for it works fine… I hate the way you’re forced too share a PDF (via an email that sends a link, and not the document itself). The folio is poor as the magnets are weak and it gets dirty easily.

Question. When doing a Print version of your book for the kickstarter VS an ebook are you just bulk ordering from KDP or Ingram? Or is there a different printer? I am in early stages of planning my kickstarter for a debut novel.

So I did my individual books as author copies through Amazon, and the custom omnibus collections through Lulu press. If you’re doing a no frills book then Amazon is usually the cheapest option, but if the book is longer or you want to enhance it (paper weight, interior art, dust jackets, etc) then do some research to find a custom printer that can handle what you want to do, and be sure to research the costs in advance so you know how to price your tiers. Hope that helps!

Appreciated this video. I am an Apple based (read that as intuitive & user friendly) and brought Scrivener & found it daunting. I do not want anything subscription based. My books lean towards non-fiction memoir and self-help (I have Final Draft gathering dust) so I want something that doesn't make my eyes spin to try to organize.
