I once thought Tibbett was the greatest. Then possibly Merrill but I now can’t pick between Granforte and Bastiannini. But maybe Granforte shades Ettore. What an astonishing singer.

There is a reason why Guillaume Tell isn't wildly recorded. It is such a murderous opera for tenors. Long and demanding. This video is just an excerpt of a much longer opera. Gedda is one of the two who dared to attempt this opera and his voice was born for this. Forever treasure this record because there is likely not another soul in foreseeable future can tackle this challenging piece with such bravery and power like Gedda did.

Such a perfectly beautiful voice before the leukemia. This is one of his finest roles. I never get tired of watching and listening to him perform it. Actually, my favorite tenor. There are others with bigger voices, but they don't have the tone and color of Jose's. In his autobiography, he talks about his renditions of this particular operatic aria. Here, he uses his head voice at the aria's high note, while he had regularly used his chest voice. The music director at the time suggested he might try it differently for just one performance, as Carreras was known for his perfect use of head voice. Initially, he rightfully demurred, because he thought that critics would say he couldn't hit the note in chest voice. He then agreed to try it anyway and risk it, just for the opportunity of seeing how the reaction would be. It was that controversial of an interpretive decision. It made history. Obviously, the audience loved it 🎉 A lot of critics panned it. I happen to love both. 💕
