What was there to laugh at? I've seen the full episode, and there wasn't anything to make anyone laugh there, either. Someone has a seriously warped sense of humor to think there's anything humorous here.

Handley was an idiot. He threw away a great pension and severance package for one moment of anger. Firing that jerk was one of the best moves Whipple could have made. Note: Handley died 5 years later, (just after being released from prison) a penniless beggar.

This was silly, not funny, not educational, barely entertaining. Now don't get me wrong, as a kid I loved watching Twilight Zone, but this particular episode was one of the more sanctimonious ones. Besides, as one of the commenters pointed out, Hanley would have had to be an "idiot" to have thrown away his severance pay and pension, not to mention end up in jail for assault and battery! High morals are fine and dandy when you're rich, but they're too pricey when you're trying to put food on the table or keep a roof over your head. Plus Violence Is NEVER An Acceptable Option!!!

Funny how this was seen back in 1964 as fiction but now with Robotics and AI its becoming a reality. Wonder who these companies will sell their products too when we are all out of work because of this technology. "History Repeats itself"
@ScoutPL3 жыл бұрын
We don't need to wait for robots and AI to see people unable to purchase products. In a week we've seen a minimum wage increase which will eliminate jobs and raise prices along with the first strikes against fossile fuels which will again, eliminate jobs and raise prices. But this is just the path leading to socialism since we'll undoubtedly institute monthly financial support, whether we couch that as COVID relief or something else. Want to see how that works? Look at American Indian tribes, such as in Montana, where many lay around on the Rez, awaiting their "per cap" drinking the time away.

Car Dealers of the future. I thought it was funny in 1964 when I was 10. The machines firing him is even funnier. Mel (I mean Whipple) cries in his beer. SO many people I wish I'd done that to before I retired. Many liberal so called journalists deserve a back hand like this one.

These are the players - with or without a scorecard. In one corner a machine; in the other, one Wallace V. Whipple, man. And the game? It happens to be the historical battle between flesh and steel, between the brain of man and the product of man's brain. We don't make book on this one and predict no winner... but we can tell you for this particular contest, there is standing room only - in the Twilight Zone.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter; For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroisms. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. Do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born out of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; You have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

@@willoughby1888 Thanks I checked out the link you sent me. Here is a small excerpt from it.... Desiderata was written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann, a poet and lawyer from Terre Haute, Indiana. The word desiderata means “things that are desired.” Ehrmann said he wrote it for himself, “because it counsels those virtues I felt most in need of.” These virtues have been valued by countless others as Desiderata rose in popularity in the late ’60s and early ’70s. It is making a strong comeback today, as parents and grandparents are passing along this wisdom to their loved ones.

Unfortunately, this is only half of the story. The other side to this coin is if Mr. Whipple didn't innovate and replace human labor with machine labor, he would eventually lose his company to another company that did. We are coming to a time now in human history where machines are more efficient than men. Maybe one day, with enough compassion, we can bring in a Universal Basic Income but it will be after a lot of misery, shame and anger.
