I remember that movie! 8 legged freaks was horrifying as a kid 😂 over here in NZ though spiders dont get bigger than your thumb though so im good. The moment i got my first taste of Thalassophobia was Spyro 2 Ripto's Rage. The level where you go into deep water and there are giant robot sharks 😂😂😂 me as a tiny kid was scarred.

I think my fear of submech is more of the fact of “Well, these were human structures and they’re here underneath the deep blue with no survivors in sight. So, where did they go or what got them and is it still here with me?”

For me, the game was terrifying when I first started, severe case of ocean phobia, but then I began gaining confidence. Now most of the game doesn't frighten me with 1,200 hours logged. What does still frighten me is the Crater's Edge, and that's the absolute void. There's no point of reference out there, total darkness, total nothingness. I'll never be confident in the Crater's Edge...

Same experiece here. I didnt knew nothing about this game. I thought it was a beautiful ocean exploration game with base building. Somehow i ended beyond the mushroom forest in my seamoth, looking for blueprints. And from above a big big shadow engulfed me. And then that roar. I got ice on my spine. I flew with my seamoth in the wrong direction, found some big rocks sit underneath them for almost an hour. Time pased by in the real world, i didnt even realised i was just siting in one place, looking like a crazy man into the darkness of the ocean, listening to that helish roar. One week i stayed in the shallow's, until i was forced to leave bcs i farmed all the resources. Subanutica, Alien Isolation and Outer Wilds are some really special and unique games out there, and they all three have one big common theme: the fear of the unknown.

Back when it released I stopped playing once I say the Reaper. I just “noped” altF4 out of there. Only finished it like a week ago 😅

Subnautica has never really scared me, neither has oceans in general. Yeah I get a jolt of adrenaline when I see a reaper or ghost leviathan, but it never lasts long. Maybe it’s because I watched people play it on KZbin before playing and got a decent amount of background knowledge ruining the unknown aspect of the fear. Hopefully I can get that fear from below zero as I haven’t seen anything about that yet.

There is only one thing on earth that makes me shiver violently and that is the sound of reapers in the distance, it swallows me whole the onset of panic, the freezing of my muscles, the terror, and the sounds of the water whooshing as I speed up to either get away or do what I needed to do. nothing else scares me like the reaper, ghost leviathans don't, dragon leviathans don't, even the emperor Jumpscare failed to replicate the same sudden dread of that all too familiar roar in the distance. truly a masterpiece of a game, a one of a kind gem that's holds a special place in my heart.

Fun fact: The Aurora landed in the safe shallows but the collision made the water murky and the crash attracted the reapers.

Definitely an unpopular opinion but I don’t think a full game would have been able to sustain the level of tension & terror that this short demo did.

I love the demo. it was genuinrly terrifying and amazingly written. I do wish it hadn't also influenced what felt like 95% of indie horror game plots and vibes for the following decade! Personally feel that such a horrific trope should not be so casually overused. Not P2's fault, though. Maybe access to the full game woukd have given more scope to the copycats.

I think it would have been nice if they had put a piece of this hallway into the Silent Hill 2 remake. It could have been part of Angela's story.

Relatively short (not 1hr+ like some folks) yet such a great insight into PT’s structure and tactics. As an indie dev, this was quite educational. Worth a sub and like.

I’ve still got it installed on my PS4 from 2014. I actually almost got rid of this console recently while having a clear out to minimise my setup as much as possible. (My thought process was that I could just play the remake on Dreams) I thought I’d wiped the console via settings so I took it to CEX just to get some cash for it, but apparently the disc drive was a bit dodgy so they wouldn’t take it. Went across the road to cash converters where the guy behind the desk hooks it up to a monitor for testing. Could see instantly that it hadn’t reset the console to factory settings as my account was still on the login screen (whoops) and I was about 80% sure that CEX hadn’t deleted anything on the harddrive. Anyway, at last second something clicked, I sorta came to my senses and realised it would be insanely stupid to go ahead with this. I went through an awkward back and forth to say that I’d changed my mind (they would’ve accepted it for a bit less with a dodgy disc drive). This guy stupidly pulls the cable out instead of turning off the correct way so I’m going home lowkey dreading that PT has been deleted. But when I get home I realise that not only does the disc drive work perfectly (there was a bit of resistance at first but after a few tries it was working like normal), but PT was still there - thank god. But yeah, lesson learned, amirite? What was I thinking? Now I keep it offline, solely as a PT machine and I even bought PT stickers from Redbubble to go on it. Best decision ever.

I was playing the other night and i had a similar experience to yours when talking about getting lost inside a wreck. It was hands down the scariest part of the game so far. My hands were sweating, my heart was racing, and i couldnt find the exit, couldnt even tell what direction i was going, and the exit was no where to be seen. I tried to pause the game and look around for the exit while the clock was paused, but i couldnt find it. I slowely suffocated and it was terrifying. I cant imagine how that would feel in real life.... And the scariest part is its happened to people. They actually have a rule for deep sea divers that youre only supposed to use a third of your oxygen for exploring. 1 third for going down and looking around, 1 third for the return, and another third incase something goes wrong. However theres been many times were people push their limits and dont have enough time to find their way out. I think thats truly the scariest way to go. Just alone and lost, hidden in a cave or pile of wreckage where no one will even think to look for you. You cant even hope your body will float to the surface and make its way to land.. youre just... trapped there.. forever.

Same. I’m actually surprised they never released a patch to make it unplayable on the PS4 like they did with the PS5 - but just to be safe I’ve taken my console offline permanently. It’s basically a PTstation now. Was initially a spare media player/console but the fan is too loud to justify using it for long periods of time.

@tomparkin2068 Thats exactly how i see my Ps4 now. PTstation is very apt. Basically all i use it for now is letting my buds experience it. Wont get Silent Hills but we still have this masterpiece.

So fun fact, I actually already have/had thalassaphobia before playing the game, and through my (now) multiple playthroughs, it has slowly helped me face my fears and now my thalassaphobia doesn't feel quite as big as it once was. It was a definite struggle for me my first time playing, and it took me a long while to build up the courage to press on when confronted with something that made my phobia flare up. But I preserved and finished the game, and it's now become one of my favorites and I'll happily recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it.

I watched Jesse Cox's drunken playthrough with his friends. After watching it, I was absolutely horrified and fascinated. I don't think a game or demo had ever created its atmosphere so incredibly quickly. I fell down the rabbit hole, watching any videos about what lore could be pieced together from the experience. I was also living in a basement at that time with a narrow hallway getting to my bedroom, so when I say I was imagining Lisa at the end of that hallway for *years* afterwards. It wasn't a major thing, but it enough to have an inkling in the back of my mind. This experience burrowed in me. And I never even got a chance to play it. I've always been a spectator, finally getting a PS4 years later at the end of its lifecycle for a couple hundred bucks. PT made me appreciate horror for what it can do, and it fueled me to be able to sit down and watch horror that's quiet and conceptual.

I didn’t get the chance to play the original game but I got a near 1:1 fan remake of it on PC called P.T. Emulation 1.4. I have played a ton of horror games (since I am a huge fan of the horror genre) and that fan remake scared me more than any official full length horror game I have ever played. It was so terrifying that there were times where I was literally shaking in fear and had to take breaks from playing it. No horror game or movie has ever affected me like that.

I am amazed by how many people find Subnautica scary. There are two things tgat I massively respect in this game. Though it can feel tense, there are no scripted spooky moments and no creature can deal any irreversable harm. If you keep your eyes peeled, nothing will ever jumpscare you in Subnautica and it helps the beauty outshadow the fright for me.
@Kinosho_Kawakami27 күн бұрын
now play it in VR lol i cannot play Subnautica the regular way anymore, it HAS to be in VR. and with 100+ mods, some that add even more to the fear and depth with new limits and creatures, it makes the game so much more exciting for me or so much more fear-inducing for you.
