It's not John Williams who deserves these comparisons. It's Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, Miklos Rozsa, and - especially - Bernard Herrmann.

Beautiful score, lousy movie. The movie had a lousy script, which sought to sell viewers on the ridiculous notion that the resistance liberated Paris. We liberated Paris. The resistance killed the Gerries with kindness. The movie had too many big names hanging around with nothing of value to do. The resistance crap was a running theme in my childhood. In The Great Escape, resistance fighters kill German officers at a Parisian outdoor cafe, and save one of the only three escapees to get away in one piece, and Combat!, by far the best WWII TV series, wasted too many episodes promoting resistance fairy tales. One exception: "The Convict." The resistance story was the usual b.s., but Gilbert Roland was wonderful, in the title role.

Gregory Peck portrayed the Joseph Mengele of popular culture: He wore a white suit, had a jungle fortress, along with minions to do his biding. The real Joseph Memgele kept a low Profile.

Hope for the best, expect the worst Some drink champagne, some die of thirst No way of knowing which way it's going Hope for the best, expect the worst! Hope for the best, expect the worst The world's a stage, we're unrehearsed Some reach the top, friends, while others drop, friends Hope for the best, expect the worst! I knew a man who saved a fortune that was splendid Then he died the day he planned to go and spend it Shouting "Live while you're alive! No one will survive!" Life is sorrow-here today and gone tomorrow Live while you're alive, no one will survive-there's no guarantee Hope for the best; expect the worst. The rich are blessed; the poor are cursed That is a fact, friends, the deck is stacked, friends Hope for the best, expect the… Even with a good beginning, it's not certain that you're winning. Even with the best of chances, they can kick you in the pantses Look out for the- Watch out for the worst! Hey!

Another good philosophy I follow is from The Rolling Stones. This song with it was on the B side of the 45 with Honky Tonk Women, "You can't always get what you want" But if you try sometimes you find, you get what you need!

Is there a musicologist out there who can tell the difference between Jerry Goldsmith's MacArthur march and John Williams's 1941 march? The 1941 march gets a lot more distribution and can even be heard on terrestrial radio now and then. But this is another case where Jerry's only real competition was himself: Patton was a better movie with a better march.

One of my all time favourite Goldsmith scores, waltzes, scherzos, marches, wielded into a dark fantasia that is uniquely the Masters own. Thank you.

One of Mel Brooks’s best. I feel he peaked with Young Frankenstein and has been rehashing movie parodies (and size jokes) since then. (I also think Woody Allen’s early movies were his best.)

Goldsmith is as great since "The Man from UNCLE" soundtrack here. And the main piece could be summorized and also called "Der Führerwaltz". The music here is as intryguing as the movie.

With how often "no one will survive" is repeated in the opening song, you'd kind of expect the movie not to pretend that the whole "Would you kill to be rich?" conflict of the original book never existed...
@putinscat1208 Жыл бұрын
Goldsmith's music is smooth, always full of sound, and he doesn't just follow the movie scenes literally. Him and John Williams are the best modern composers. You have to go back to Ben Hur 1959 to beat them.
