i kinda see last world of a shooting star like a suicide letter. the goodbye at the end is basically her saying goodbye to the living world. "They'll never know hoe i stared at the dark of my room like a blood sniffing shark", she's bsdically talking about people not realizing that she lost the will to live- spending every day and night in the dark, with that feeling of emptiness inside of her. " I'm relieved that i left my room tidy," is almost like a way to say that she did all she had left to do before dying, completing all of her final tasks so she can leave without any weight on her shoulders. Idk just my interperation lol

i kinda see once more to see you as a queer song. "But with everybody watching us, our every move, we do have reputation," is like feeling the need to hide your identity because you know people are gonna judge

i don't smoke is not a song, but a freling. I personally relate to everything, and she also knows exactly how to express those feelings through words, i remember being desperate of my ex begging him to hit me so he would feel better and not ghost me for days.Mitski fan since 2010💕

I have two things to say! 1) when the pawn is my favorite album of all time, so excited for you to do that one 2) you should listen to Ys by Joanna Newsom! She's the epitome of dense instrumentation and verbosity, she has such beautiful language

Long story short is a song about her and kimye drama when she almost got canceled and the world hated her... but this one person( Joe awalyn) who always believed her was there for her when her reputation was the worst when she was called a snake by 301million people on the internet...

Not sure but sounds like you are making fun of her.....& if you are, it would only be because you haven't heard the way she sings. Her voice is fine, but it's the way she uses it that makes her so great. She'll never try to win a Grammy. I'd really like to know what you think of Billie Elish winning all those Grammies.

The part of Jonathan you like, Fiona actually spoke about in an interview! It's about how her relationship with Jonathan Ames, and how he took her on a trip to Coney Island (as mentioned in the start) and she was jealous and bitter because he used to take his past girlfriends on trips to Coney Island too but he ended up giving her a lovely experience on the trip and he was truly kind to her, therefore the "If she's part of the reason you are how you are, she's alright with me"

There’s truly no comparison. Fiona Apple is the best songwriters of this generation, and even calling her that falls short for what great of an artist she is. No adjective can describe what she embodies.

I love the way that she paints hegemonic masculinity as detrimental to everyone in real men. “Real men” aren’t allowed to express emotions, and have to “suck it in” and bottle everything up. Satirically, she claims they “don’t eat ‘cause they’re above that, damn it,” and I think the parallel between not eating and not expressing emotions (both harmful to your mental and physical health) essentially means that in order to be a real man by society’s standards, you have to become inhuman, above basic human needs. Whereas little boys, perhaps on their way to becoming real men but younger and haven’t (yet) lost their emotional capacity, and are able to tell Mitski whatever it is that she wants to hear, and “make [her] feel lovely for a little while.” This ties into a theme of the album which is how women are taught that their value is completely dependent upon their appearance, fertility, and ability to be a worthy side character in the life of a man. I think her vocal delivery in these lines where she is requesting validation from men communicates frustration from the battle between self-awareness that it’s silly to need men to make you feel like you’ve been living correctly and still seeking it out anyway. It’s like she is just sick of it and she is completely over “real men” who think that they are doing her a favor by complimenting her body and physical appearance, whereas “little boys” are who she is seeking validation from because their love maybe feels more genuine but she is just incredibly angry that she is dependent on their validation despite knowing better.

one of my most favorite songs from mitski is Old Friend. idk why but it reminds me so much of Adele. or maybe im thinking of a different artist cause i havent listened to adele at all ever since my childhood. the way she sings "ill take coffee and talk about nothing" is really giving adele (if adele is the right artist im thinking of)

carry me out, at least in my interpretation, follows a narrator who is still in mourning over someone they lost. whether this be literal or metaphorical is left intentionally vague. The narrator sits on the rooftop, letting down their hair, which is most often done as an act of relaxation, as it “unleashes the night”; this likely points to the narrator watching the sun set as their hair is behind them, so the imagery is that their dark hair is engulfed in the darkness behind them of the night. The mention of “the scent of flowers still in bloom from morning showers” likely is driven by ‘still’ as in something that realistically should be gone, but lingers like the feelings left behind from loss. the narrator experiencing all of these things only intensifying their feelings of isolation. then saying this persons name from the rooftop as it is likely the closest to “the stars” they can get. The second verse is the narrator driving recklessly. They’re out on the road at night. describing headlights as ‘spirits’ and the road as ‘the styx’. This likely infers that the reckless behavior during driving will kill the narrator. The styx is the river that not only separates the mortal world from the underworld, but it is also the river all spirits must cross to reach the afterlife. so by saying “the headlight spirits lead me down the styx” the narrator is saying that those headlights are leading them towards the path to death or of self destruction. lastly the chorus is a resounding and repeating plea to “carry me out” which holds a double meaning. on one end it could be “carry me out of here” as in take me with you away from this place, as the narrator feels as though they are unable to do so themself. alternatively, it could be pleading for someone to acknowledge and end their suffering, the method by which it is done being unknown. carry me out is lyrically one of mitski’s best songs, it has some of her most succinct imagery and not only that, but also combines beautiful vocals and instrumentals.

She hasn't made a bad album.... I like Fetch the Bolt Cutters best, because she's at her best when she just doesn't GAF about being commercial. Idler Wheel is maybe my second favorite, for much the same reason. The way she turns a phrase, often with a metaphor that works in a couple of different ways, is amazing... She is fearlessly personal and FIERCELY vulnerable and her expressive voice matches her words.
