I'm not a fan of epoxy, so I liked your approach. It also felt like the oil was too much although I understand why you used it.🙂👍

The nice thing about Danish Oil on a piece like this, is that it will most probably terminate anything that's still living in the material. And, it's fun. Fun is really the only thing that matters in the end. I love to work with stuff that is probably too far gone and see if it can shine.

Definitely a Bowl, I did a large bowl a couple of years ago from a NZ native Black Beech root, 470 X 290 X 130 mm, and called it My Watermelon Bowl, as that's the only fruit it would ever hold, (now in a private collection in Florida) very well done for stepping outside the square. Is what you call gum tree a eucalyptus. I have turned some in the UK. It splits like a bugger so once turned I set the torch on it and burn the heck out of it , sand it and slaver it in linseed and leave for a few weeks and it twists and moves and looks really good. It also brings out some great colours. If you have some try it out mate.

Beautiful piece! I love the innovative way you visualize it! One question: you never end showed how you finished the bottom, how did you finish it and what type of wood was the base?
@MichaelAttwoodDesignStudio22 күн бұрын
@@ofrank6551 Thanks for the positive feedback. Yes I didn't finish the base on camera, good pickup! I turned a basic footing in the base and left a big chunk which the face plate was screwed into. Then, I use a carving tool to remove that chunk and clean up the base with a power sander. Alternatively, I could have used a piece of dowel as a type of jam chunk and turned the base clean on the lathe which I sometimes also do. Will include these processes in future videos for a more comprehensive start-to-finish demonstration. Thanks for your question.

@@jennifertreller3729 haha, my wife agrees with you! I usually do, but this piece was cutting easily.
@andrewallason453017 күн бұрын
Personally I find gloves significantly affect my ability to grip the tools. This loss of touch affects my ability to use the tools ‘cleanly’ and leads to rough finishing and more sanding hours, as I have to grip the tools harder. Besides, skin heals, gloves need replacing, which is another expense (and not environmentally friendly 😝).
