Most of the fish in the aerial footage were chum (many of them very old) so really the skill was to find and trigger bites of the fewer Coho swimming around them without hooking any of the older chum.

That's a good idea but a lot of the time, due to the terrain - log jams, deep creeks and the tangled undergrowth its often impossible to go in the direction you require. Two of the guys in the video left their departure a bit late in the evening and apparently it took them two and a half hours to get the 3 or 4 kms back to their vehicle. .

Amazing video Dave! Had a great time in the river fishing together and talking about life with you and the rest of the crew. Love the quality drone aerial takes of the run. It was a true pleasure and thanks for entertaining us with your videos! Quick note on the rod snap. Not sure if that was the cause but if you look at 33:21 , sometimes when coho make a run and the rod is bent like that, tips snap. Rods are designed to bend in a arc shape and hockey-stick-shape like that one may snap the tip. Again impossible to know if it was that or just bad luck but something to keep in mind for our common friend!
@davebeningfield
@davebeningfield 17 күн бұрын
What was funny was that the snap occurred about 20 minutes after we all had a conversation regarding rod quality and I did tell them about how I've TWICE had that specific brand rod snap on me while at the river in the past. Warranties are all well and good but if you've taken the day off work, hiked all the way in through the bushwack jungle, and then have the rod snap. - .well, it is annoying and though I have 2 six weight trout rods of that brand that are both about 20 years old I am a bit wary of that brand. Luckily on video it was the end of the day and our friend took it well and philosophically. I'm so happy you liked the video and I hoped it captured the spirit of the day.

rule of thumb is never move your rod hand past your ear. I've had rods break when I had my rod hand more or less up to my nose including an rpl that snapped just above the cork. Most likely the graphite was already bruised or fractured before that happened.
13 күн бұрын
@@davebeningfield I've broken rods on 20cm fish, also broke a rod on very soft back casts, then I put chum on the same 6wt replacement rod I broke twice before and it's holding. Bottom line is, manufacturing isn't always the best. When it comes to landing fish the kid actually did a good job with his attempt before the rod broke, rod harm fully extended behind him and not too high in the air, then net arm fully extended. (What do I know about landing fish? Well I net EVERY fish even 20cm fish and I run fishing session on a timer to see how many fish I can catch and release) The only tip I can actually give if you're going on a long hike for a fishing trip or driving a distance, have a spare rod. I always pack a spare rod, reel, and only leave spare boots in the car. Lastly, I've had tungsten beads hitting the blank, and also another situation where my girlfriend kind of dropped the rod on the bank full of rocks. Eventually those rods snapped after a little while. And that's why I got myself into rod building...
@davebeningfield
@davebeningfield 13 күн бұрын
@@RalphHify Maybe the beast he landed at time 7:50 over strained the rod, but most likely as you say something bruised the rod previously
@davebeningfield
@davebeningfield 13 күн бұрын
Yes, for a couple of years after my last break I did carry a spare rod, but lately I've gotten lazy or overconfident with the rod I have now. To me it seems softer and more forgiving, but that might be just my imagination.

And for some reason they entirely dissed my daughter. She didn't land any coho, just a lot of chum. She connected with a coho or two but they got off. We started switching rods thinking it was maybe due to the different sink rates on the sink tips (that's why you see I'm holding different rods in the clips.) Same flies, same retrieve, just crap luck. Twice I said "Sorry sweetie, got another one." Then we went back a week later during high water, couldn't access the same spots - she and her friend managed to land three, I didn't even get a nibble. Revenge!

Chris and myself ended up going again on Sunday afternoon, beautyfull day on the water, although tough conditions to cross the main stem at the last section, water levels were about 20cms higher and the water flow had doubled, so we couldn't cross 😢. We ended up going back to the forest and bushwhacked our way to the main stem, and remembered your comments about how tough those berry bushes were, dear lord. The African Queen & Apocalypse Now? You did mention Conrad's Heart of Darkness too. Great to see that number of immature cutthroat. Must be converting to good cutthroat rearing habitat. People fish Siddle Creek at the head of the slough in spring and catch post spawn trout. I wish it would be closed. Where you went ashore by the small creek - I think that was the old Red Rock access. So named because someone spray painted a good sized boulder fluorescent red and left it by the highway access. It's long since been removed.

@@RalphHify Yup, Apocalypse Now and The Heart of Darkness were the two linked items I was referring to. Apocalypse Now was a modern retelling of Conrad's story, which took place in the Belgium Congo in the 1890s, I believe. I'm pleased you managed to watch through until that part, I know this one's a bit long. Also, we actually didn't spend a lot of time fishing, just casually here and there, and still found a lot of small, healthy cutties, which surprised me as it looked like marginal water - this time of year, at least.
