The air des sylvains is a brilliant interjection into the end of the fatal amour vocal. It was from Leclair: Scylla et Glaucus, not composed by Rameau.

Bravo - to all but particularly the incomparable bass baritone Stephen McLeod, who brings great depth and spirituality to Bach's beautiful liturgical music. Stephen McLeod's interpretations of St Matthew Passion are also sublime. Bravo and thanks to Les Ambassadeurs for posting this.

I've been looking forward to this release for ages as a huge Mondonville fan. His music is is THE best, no competition! Not only is this a world premiere recording but it is also THE very last existent work (both sacred and dramatic/operatic) by Mondonville that had not been recorded until now! We now have everything recorded; see the wikipedia article on Mondonville for full details of every recording.

1:36 - 1:41 As a musician you know that these chords should not make sense, upon grammatical manuscript, but alas, they do. One of THE BEST & most beautiful succession of chords & harmonies in my opinion. It is among my top favourite 3 of all times!

No doubt Bach is the finest composer ever. Those haunting dissonances and suspensions. And to think Bach rattled music like this off once a week as a job in addition to all the other works he composed. The period instruments really make it here, the lack of vibrato in the strings gives it such a static quality, I really cannot describe this in words. I am constantly amazed at the inventiveness of his arias, the number of combinations of instruments and voices. Here the oboe has a wonderful melody that either contrasts or blends with the vocal line, I don't know what to call it other than perfection. I am not even religious but I listen to his sacred works in complete wonder, the perfection of the words and music together, he gives such power and emotion to the words that somehow make me a believer. I just feel so lucky to be able to appreciate this music and almost feel sorry for those who have no idea it even exists.

A wonderful performance indeed:-)) I suggest you also listen to Vikingur Olafssons piano transcription of this work. IMO It demonstrates both how well Bach’s music is suited for rearrangements and what a gifted musician Olafsson is. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ2oXmx-mcSBqKcsi=GdDJ93whPJ2HaWxv

Lovely to hear the great Stephen McLeod sing this - his "mache dich" from the S.Matthew Passion is incomparable - and I really like his new look! So gentle, moving - looking forward to hearing more from this exquisite interpreter of liturgical-spiritual music. Bravo, Stephen!

What a missed opportunity to enjoy such a beautiful piece-all the effort by the musicians, the sublime venue, only to be ruined by the ridiculously fast tempo selected by the conductor. It is not the flutists fault that their section sounds like cackling chickens or that the violins play so quickly the musicians don’t seem to enjoy the performance. Too much strain. What’s the rush?
