I have miced flutes. I have either miced from about a foot to 14 inches from the front to get the whole instrument or from overhead pointed down at the flute to not have the breath blow into the mic. About 4 to 8 inches above the flute angled down at it. With the flautist, I have told them that the blow hole directly below the mic will get a lot of breathiness in the sound. Think of like how Jethro Tull sounded with his recordings that have his flute playing. As they move the blow hole directly below the blow hole more towards the body of the flute -- about halfway between the blow hole and the keys at most, will get a cleaner sound with less breathiness. More towards a concert flute sound. A single point mic for live sound of a flute is tricky to do. I urge you to experiment with the overhead pointed down towards the flute and experiment with where along the headpiece it is overhead to get the sound you want. That and varying the distance from a few inches to about a foot or 14 inches. This will place the mic on axis and keep it's. The method you are using with the mic horizontal but off axis keeps from blowing into the mic but then colors the sound with how the off axis frequency response works. The sound "color" on axis is not the same as the sound "color" off axis. I like your flutes and playing technique.
