I am from Texas and a millennial. I have watched small schools and big schools increase over the years in the number of so called cheerleaders that they have. I have seen the skirts pleat and go to that awful a line. The poms go from big as your upper body to so small you can not see them. What is the point in having a pom pom as a prop? I have come up with my ideal number on a traditional sideline squad. I do not think any squad should be bigger than 16 and I think that should be at the college level only. I think high school it should be no more than 12. Traditional sideline squad or competition. I think too many cheerleaders on a floor looks tacky. Too much to keep in unison. And I think being a cheerleader is not special anymore because they have pointless tryouts with pointless judges who let everyone on the squad. You have 23 high schoolers tryout for a varsity squad and 20 make it. There are not 20 good cheerleaders. I personally am not impressed by many squads I see today. My high school had way better cheerleaders when I was there. They do not anymore. I, too, was on a squad that getting too big. This trajectory has been happening for decades now. I wish they would bring back pep squads for the stands and only have at most 12 cheerleaders on the sidelines at the high school level. Anyone can be on the pep squad. Jeans, tees, megaphones, poms, etc. And they do the cheers, chants, yell the fight song lyrics, etc. at the cheerleaders direction all from the stands. When cheerleading became hyper fixated on the acrobatics, that became the downfall of it in my view. I loved doing stunts but it is called CHEER LEADING. Just because you can do a standing back tuck does not mean you know how to yell or woo a crowd into doing a cheer along with you and your squad. I could do both. You are welcome. 😂 Some of the best cheerleaders I have ever seen could do no gymnastics but could woo a crowd with electric jumps and amazing voice inflection and motions. Also jumping has fallen out of fashion at least with Texas squads at their high school games. We still did jumps when I cheerleader in high school and college after every cheer and chant. Good times. Hashtag not all. I know that. But the “cheerleading” I am seeing for many years now. Is not up to par. If you want to know why so many injuries in “cheerleading” you should probably look at that squad that has 20-25 bodies and only 10-12 of them are strong enough to lift a body. The others could not lift a small pom. Out of shape and no talent. Get it together. These tongue in cheek fun routines of the 80s. Very cool. Louisville always has so much talent, but you should have to work for that spot. The days of everyone can be a cheerleader are stale to me. Small squads, bigger poms, drop the a line skirts….I am glad I am a man and did not have to wear one….jump again….yell again and please CHEER again. Go Cardinals! P.S. James Speed choreographed one of my routines in high school. Good times. 📣 I think someone said he was in this video. I will have to shut up and check it out.

I'm just commenting to add that this school is the National Champs again, for I think the 17th year. I'm a local girl with family still there. This team lives and breathes practice, practice, practice. And it shows.

In this video, I love seeing a lot of my gymnastics coaches and cheerleading coaches that got me tumbling since I was a little tyke into my adulthood years. What's especially great was seeing my older sister who's about 14 years older than me in this competition with my long-term coach Sam (Lori) Moss. I didn't get to have the pleasure of growing up and knowing my sister at all, but having Sam as my long-term gymnastics coach with the rest of her family & entourage all telling me stories about my sister (Carole) that I never would have known if it wasn't for them. So thank you and God bless you all for helping me with my life in all aspects! 🫶🏼💞🥰

This is the cheerleading squad I was on a month later. Any chance you have the UCA National Cheerleading Competition for 1984 and 1985 for Clarksville High School? I love this video of all my friends from 1983!
