so the literal translation of "il mio sguardo l'incontro" would be "i discovered with my eyes this vision of delight" ? - that's not what i call "literal"... (thanks anyway - this synoptic view of "original" italian with english version was enlightening... - although it seems that the original was german, titled "Ach so fromm, ach so traut" ! - how about a trilingual video ?...)

Truly Amazing How Many Different Version There Are Of This Great Ballad

Robert Graves said his father based the tune on the old jig Top of the Old Cork Road. He also said that Stanford only suggested a few chords for the song. Graves sold his rights to the song to the music publishers Boosey for 1 guinea and missed out on thousands of pounds of royalties. Stanford ending up making thousands of times more than Graves on the song because he retained rights as "composer".

This has been my favorite aria for more than 70 years, when I first heard Caruso’s recording. I can listen to it over and over and over, every day. It never get tiresome; it’s so beautiful.

The tune far precedes Charles Villiers Stanford, it is an English Country Dance tune, first published in the last quarter of the 18th century, under the name "Yorkshire Lasses."

Thanks for the info. England had/has great country dance tunes, hornpipes etc. This song was very popular in Ireland in the 1950s.

I wanna write something mean cause you're assuming something cool that you don't understand to be meaningless, but whenever I act like that its because I feel like shit and lash out, so I'd feel bad for lashing out in return... Fr you should check it out again when u have time, this is something I've tried to achieve myself before and he did it really well: It's all the tonal information from human speech isolated as Midi. Kind of like isolating the vowels from the consonants I guess ??
