At concerts when the artist plays a slow or sad song, people (used to) light up a lighter and wave it in the air. Most people just use phones now though.

holy shit this is the indiscriminate childhood survivor mechanism on display and we laugh. How did I never see this? He uses intellectualism (solving puzzles) to build his ego ("im smart. how can i prove it?") and fulfill his emotional needs ('I matter' "that was a way I feel validated") when he is uncomfortable and insecure. The parallel worlds he is talking about are experienced by emotions though. He writes the beer poem when he is uncomfortable and insecure and then he continues to ask 'why?' when he just answered his own question (deflection). And in the same way, instead of emotionally recognizing his discomfort and insecurity, he continues (in the medium of the show and in the narrative itself) to engage with 'time-consuming, if completely unproductive things'. This is his indiscriminating survivor mechanism at work again. The only emotional recognition he brings himself is the half step humorous quip about his loneliness as implied by his art, the three dimensional crossword puzzle, a manifestation of his survivor mechanism (intellectualism, puzzle solving). His means of evolution comes not from spending time with other people (read books, hang out with english teachers, become friends with a poet), but from reading a dictionary, the most isolated literal non-emotional option. "But for me this all sprang from the growing need to feel (emotionally) validated in the way I did from a puzzle book as a kid". Once again Demetri cycles from emotional discomfort into intellectual self aggrandization as his indiscriminate survivor mechanism, his default way of coping with his emotional discomfort, derived from the circumstances of his childhood. The only direct nonhumorous mention of 'feeling' thus far has been with respect to self-aggrandization or 'improvement' in the most superficial 'intellectual' sense. "Mind over body" is such a western cliche. Now as an adult, his obsession with puzzles manifests in other artistic mediums and yet he still pines his lack of coolness which is in this case positive social/emotional validation (from chicks or the world at large). Then, the penultimate straw is pulled and he takes his intellectualism to the world at large via deconstruction of simple everyday things. Another demonstration of his indiscriminate survivor mechanism, expanding its scope, correlated with his underlying emotional discomfort. Law School. Stakes are higher. Uh oh. Survivor mechanism, go! The result? He loses himself, the core of his identity. "Crazy Demetri". His survivor mechanism completely takes over and he hates it. So he quits. Duh. Now all he is left with after discarding the plan is his survivor mechanism. And the worst part of it, or at least one of the worst parts of it all, is that he continues to experience himself through his need for validation, the same one from his youth, marked by his sarcastic self-criticism "Sweet, that's a catch". The final frontier is himself. Cool. Good idea actually. Unfortunately, his only tool is the intellect. Which is unfortunately not what he is. He is a human being. Human beings aren't logical puzzles or a regimented point system. We are emotional creatures with these crazy chaotic feelings and all the irrationality that comes with. There is of course the capacity for reason, but being a male member of western civilization it is pedestalized into something it is not. Demetri is a victim of the world he grew up in. We all are. We are given tools which aren't equipped to handle the demands of modern life. No one was there to help him. He was neglected. There wasn't much human connection in this entire show besides brief mentions of Jen. He fails. At least he tried. But also, he failed. And that's okay. They laugh. I feel bad. I don't want to laugh at this. He is like me. It explains why I was so drawn towards this show since I was like 13 or however old I was. All I had was my mind, my intellect, logic and literality. But it doesn't work. And such is the fall of the western civilization. I have hope but it will come from something very foreign. Emotion. The innate human dimension. We are all so dissociated from the very thing which drives our choices and lives. This show is a cry for help and a warning. He narrativizes his life for us and exclaims his sense of loss. Who can't relate? 'How could my life have been if I wasn't who I was?' This is almost grieving. The tragedy, the missing piece is that he is capable of viewing his life past present or future only through the intellect. the indiscriminate survivor mechanism. The math equation I = if+if+if... divided by time, for example. What Demetri needs, what I need, is to grieve, to weep for the life I 'lived' and the life I could have lived. To emotionally recognize our inner sense of pain and grief and loss and sadness through our tears. That's the most honest thing we can do. To connect with our inner emotional world. That's the way we can really change. I hope the best for everyone.

Not only is the title a palindrome but the entire special is, he starts and ends with the same quote, even says "If I" in the exact middle of the show. There is way to much in the show to even cover in one comment. I have been a long time fan of Demetri, this is his most well thought out performance in my opinion.

I've been listening to Demetri for a while and he is truly one of the smartest and funniest comedians I've ever heard. He is up there with the icons. He is so underrated. Here are some of my favorite lesser known comedians. 1. Demetri Martin 2. David Tyree 3. Billy Gardell 4. and Brian Regan and of the well known my favorites are 1. Ali Wong 2. Tom Segura 3. Natasha Leggero 4. Sasha Baron Cohen 5. Will Ferrell 6. Dave Chappelle Chappelle and here are some old time hidden gems for you younger people..... Dame Edna...... and Patricia Routledge on the tv show Keeping Up Appearances and of course Mr. Bean.

Shoot I wont be soo upset and already ahead of the game in life! Then i used to have this thing, ok i still do with other objects, but i would memorize every remote that I had or if was my friends or families too.. juuuust in case i was blind.. TA HAA! I've got it down already and dont even have to look at it... Until the One day it was my exboyfriend that said Well IF you were blind it wouldn't even matter bcuz you can't watch TV now !?!?! 🤣 This guy is a hellz yeeahhh 🤜🤛 & actually accidentally stumbled across him. Never heard of him before? Got here from watching a 24/7 comedy, mini skit per stand up comedian. He was only on for like a minute and all i captured was his first name in the background on the wall so keyed in Demetri comedian and BAM Here I am & sooo glad I did! I was also eating dinner, well more like snacking and I've always said I'm ONLY Happy When I EaT,, sooo YASSS need to be watching or listening to something funny!!! Worth noting, I really loved " Important Things" one of my favorite shows! You are so brilliant and it really gives me hope. Thanks so much for your amazing contributions to comedy.
