Hey. I live in Saint Pete as well. You should check with Zura Bay apartments on 74th. Actually there's a few complexes in this area. There alot of junk piled up around the maintenance area that doesn't look like it can be put in a regular dumpster.

You're spot on about residential work. I've been part of a smaller business networking group, but the biggest challenge is maintaining consistent attendance. My focus is primarily on dumpster rentals, though I occasionally take on cleanouts-usually for clients who've inherited properties, which is something I enjoy doing. My advice would be to identify the key sources that help secure those types of jobs. Because the ROI on those particular jobs are big.

For most B2B gigs, you'll probably need a bigger truck. Either a box truck for max capacity or something like an NPR with a lift bed....though capacity drops by a lot. An NPR box truck with a lift gate would be as close to ideal as I can imagine. Hand unloading is not the worst thing in the world, though it depends on how busy your dump is and how it is setup. A single apartment cleanout can fill up even a box truck pretty easily. For apartment complexes, you'll be routinely getting tons of stoves/ranges, a/c condensers and compressors, fridges, washers, and dryers. Not to mention a metric fkucton of boxes which are more annoying than anything else. The complexes don't want to be calling you out all the time so you need the capacity and manpower to knock everything out for them in one go. You also need the finances to be able to swallow net 30 or higher. Storage units are the same except more furniture and less empty boxes. They won't call you for one or two small units. The only positive for a pickup/trailer combo with apartments is that you'll be able to get your rig into a lot of parking garages that bigger trucks won't fit in. As to contracts.....good luck. Even if you get them, they're not really enforceable. Or more accurately, they're not worth the legal costs of taking action to enforce them. And many won't sign them because they won't have to with a different company. There is no shortage of junk companies. You'll likely just knock yourself out of any potential opportunity by asking for a contract that involves more than a handshake and some hope. You're right though, you cannot scale a pickup/trailer well. The jump to larger trucks comes with much greater expenses and often isn't worth it. Really depends on the amount of business you can generate consistently. A good setup for small company provided you can generate enough business would be one guy (you) on a pickup/trailer for small jobs, minimums, big quotes, schmoozing with whoever you want to be schmoozing with, overflow from large jobs, etc....and a box truck with lift-gate w/ 2 employees doing your larger jobs and whatever would benefit from 2 bodies. EDIT: Your employees will absolutely hate you for apartment complex gigs and storage unit gigs. They almost always eat a ton of time and they'll never get a tip beyond an occasional bottle of water.

Good video, if we are planning to use a small box truck do we need a DOT number to get into the junk removal business? What if we use a Ford F150 with a trailer, would we still need a DOT number or no since it would be under the gross weight. Located in California. Thanks!

Good work. As a business owner, the one bit of advice I will give you is don't be in a race to the bottom. What I mean by that is, trying to undercut everyone else out there just to make the fast buck is not the best business strategy. People will only place as much value on your services as you place on them yourself. Where you will profit above the bigger guys is charging similar prices with better value. At this point in your venture, you may not be ultra busy, so you can offer to be at their house in an hour to get the trash when everyone else is telling them they have a two day wait. Because you have a smaller hauling capacity, it may take you multiple trips to handle big jobs and you shouldn't lose revenue because of lowball pricing. I wish you the best and hope you can upgrade that trailer soon.
