yes the sa was voyeuristic but you cannot criticise the depth of his female characters. if you want a bunch mary sues kicking ass go watch the mcu, if you want scared, vulnerable, damaged women being who they have to be to survive, then processing their trauma and growing from it, then read berserk.

Ur actually going to put a literal whore on your podcast to answer the questions? Sorry but that’s just not how normal women think. She’s actually rationalized this as insecurity in guys, just so she can feel okay enough to survive, obviouslt she isn’t happy. But you’re gonna take her answer seriously? You should actually just say o. The show: okay how do the other girls think about this? Because this is litteraly a whore talking, a whore who had to bend time and space to justify her own feelings and persoective on the world. You’re going to take her answer seriously?

I think this the greatest berserk tribute I have seen in KZbin the love and passion behind this is clearly visible. I find myself going through a lot of hardships, in relationship, in military prep, in school, and every other piece of my life. The one thing that helps, after reading almost 33 chapters of berserk, getting as far as the trip to elfhelm, is that I ask myself "what would guts do". Sometimes I fall onto guts from the early chapters, but I find that it's almost always better to become the guts of the later chapters. One who puts doing what's right over doing what feels good. But above all, no matter what arc guts I try to follow, I must always continue on

Update, graduated boot camp The story is far from over, but I had a little recruit laminated (just covered in hella tape) picture of guts to keep me going. Now I kinda want a tattoo of it. I'm on some boot Crack wanting a tattoo, but I'll hold off and wait. I expect guts to stick with me through infantry school and farther beyond. He will always inspire me.

I have never and will never read something as emotional and moving as Berserk. It’s made me cry tears of both sadness and joy so many times. It’s helped me through my depression and motivated me as a person. I think that it perfectly represents learning to move on but never forgetting. Thank you so much for this masterpiece Miura, Rest In Peace. ❤️

Regarding Luca. It’s very telling to me that a sex worker that lived in poverty does a lot more to display compassion and forgiveness than the suposed “Christian’s”(or at least a Christianity stand in) The Holy See.

A sex worker mom for example who takes good care of her kid isn't really a good mom by putting her/him through some bullying from her/his friends or society. It'd interesting how when people see the rarest of the rarest of good sex workers.... people immideatly want to claim the moral high ground, what they accuse Christians or doing.

I really appreciate this video! I’ve felt pretty annoyed with some people when it Berserk’s depiction of !MASCULINITY and how its a manga purely for MENNN! Not that I have any problem with masculinity but it’s annoying when they act as if that’s what Berserk is about, Berserk is about it’s characters.

I enjoyed the video, though a female whose main purpose is to support the lead male character (even if that support is absolutely crucial) wouldn't be considered an example of feminist writing, but rather of traditional writing. I guess Casca is an example of a feminist character, but not very revolutionary, as her main function for a big chunck of the story is to serve as the lead male love interest and dancel in distress. Another one would be Molda but she is not really a lead character. Even Flora and the Elf Queen would be considered too pasive to transgress the role of the traditional wise women (feminists advocate for active female characters). Other females, like Slan, do not appear much and usualy evil and/or hypersexualised characters do not fall into the feminist category either. I agree that Luca was an awesome character and probably the best feminist example. Sadly she's also not a lead character. Overall, I wouldn't list Berserk into the feminist mangas, but I'm sure female readers of Berserk do relate and identify with Guts, since regardless of his gender he is still an amazing character full of virtues. Also, a male character can be a feminist if he servers as an example to other men so they respect women and do not underestimate them. I believe Guts serves this purpose very well. Rgds.

Hi there, thanks for the detailed comment. Regarding your first point, I thought a few times while making this video that someone might raise that point, and it's a failure on my part for not making a clearer potential response to that. Feminism is a broad term, it covers a range of ideologies, and while there's many overlap between them, there's no one way to define the term. That is why this video is only one type of feminist analysis, which was through the arguments used by Cynthia Enloe in the book Making Feminist Sense of International Politics. She specifically discusses how unseen women change the world despite not getting the credit they deserve. I likely should have cited examples in the video to make this clearer, again, an oversight on my part. For example, she writes substantially about the wives of army base men who have been relocated to live with them. Their main purpose, as you would say, is to support males. But Enloe still gives her own idea of feminism to highlight the importance of these women, by discussing how their presence drastically shapes national politics due to the roles they took on at the bases. So yes, while this video would likely not pass the check for a general view of feminism, that's fine. I'm specifically analyzing from Enloe's lens. This is also why I called it "A" feminist analysis. It's simply one type. Personally, I think the fact that the Berserk world would be doomed to a fate consumed by evil without the presence of these women makes them extremely important and worthy of being celebrated in a feminist sense, regardless of the fact that their actions supported a male character. Furthermore, regarding your point about Slan, that's not something I would disagree with at all. But to reiterate, I'm simply trying to do "A" feminist analysis of some characters, using a lens that is less orthodox, so Slan was never in the cards for me. Analyzing the entire series under a general feminist definition is not only something I'm grossly unqualified to do, but would also be a massive undertaking. Again, thanks for the comment, genuinely. The whole point of sharing these things and not just keeping it to myself is so I can see what other people think. I just wanted to make my perspective more visible since it seems I didn't elaborate as much as I would have liked to in the video.

@trill_nathan I absolutely agree with your response to this comment. The point of this video went over this person's head but that's understandable. With a topic like Feminism you always want tread waters with that and you did a fantastic job in not belittling this person's comment. Yet you still made your point go Across.

I think it's not necessarily that women play a supporting role to Guts in the story, but instead that they play a parallel role to him in terms of their independent interiority and equivalent inner strength. With the exception of Schierke (for whom supporting Guts helps her understand more of herself and the world around her, which I would agree is sort of traditional, if still very beautiful and compelling, writing), most of the women are like Guts in that they pretty much deal with their own independent yet equivalent struggles with inner darkness, trauma, and fate. With characters like Jill, we see that what Guts went through in childhood can be embodied in inner strength and silent trauma, not just outward resistance. Casca, meanwhile, shows us such resistance in a female character, as you said. Farnese and Nina (probably the most relatable characters to me as a woman) display that the struggle against our worst selves might not even be a battle against hatred and rage, but rather a daily effort towards care and away from selfishness. Farnese, in particular, even usurps Guts's role as Casca protector, because her struggle, despite her more typically "feminine" evils and virtues alike, resonates with Casca as more safe and relatable than Guts's consuming rage. In the end, it is she, not Guts, who saves Casca from her prison of fear. In other words, the series has many characters that, far from just existing to support Guts, are in fact just like him, but dealing with things in their own ways. Even Schierke has a largely parallel loss when she has to cope with Flora, although her mirror image is isidro more than Guts. And of course, the character that embodies solidarity with women's trauma the most is Guts himself, whose own rape is at the core of his shame and fear, forever buried under the armor of masculine rage. So, basically, I think Berserk is an extremely feminist series because it shows that everyone regardless of gender, can go through the same things, while also understanding the effects that the gendered self has on the experience and manifestation of those things. In its quest towards a total appraisal and representation of the human experience, Berserk gets gender, like so many other things, totally right, and it would be hard to convince me otherwise.
