Why do people insist on shouting when they know something is being recorded?
@joyoffiddling16 күн бұрын
Well @GeoffChambers-c5h, it's a jam session. And at jam sessions when people are moved by the spirit of the music they sometimes can't help themselves and they vocalize their joy. Sometimes it's a hoot or a holler or a "yee haw!" or a "I hear you!". It's like being in church and exclaiming "Hallelujah!” When the spirit moves you, the spirit moves you. I can assure you that when a fiddler hears any of the above while they are playing, it is taken as a supreme compliment. It is inspiring and cements the bond of fellowship that is at its' zenith in the moment of the tune being shared amongst musicians. One of the biggest goals of this channel is to capture such genuine, authentic, and unrehearsed moments that make jam sessions imperfectly beautiful. It's one reason why you will not see any videos of live stage performances in front of an audience on this channel. There are countless other channels on KZbin that do a very fine job of featuring those types of presentations. As for the Joy of Fiddling channel, my hope is to invite people into living rooms and campgrounds and parking lots to witness what is not readily available to everyone. Musicians playing together in intimate settings for the love of the music, not because they are doing a show for an audience or recording for posterity. And that sometimes means a "yee-haw!" is going to sneak into the mix.

I've whatched this for hundred times, it's ageless. Wonderful event, wish i would be there and just listen by the campfire. She's phenomenal player. Not like Paganini or someone else, but much more familiar approach and warm sound, I like the improvised little runs. She's good player!! 😍

Tashina Clarridge's fiddle style here reminds me of that of Jerry Robichaud, a Massachusetts fiddler who is profiled in the 1983 documentary "New England Fiddles."
@joyoffiddlingАй бұрын
While I cannot say for certain, it would not surprise me at all if Tashina was familiar with or at least had heard of Mr. Robichaud.

Can you add the names of the musicians to the video description above?
@joyoffiddlingАй бұрын
Hi @dbadagna. The Joy of Fiddling always lists the names of every single musician, featured or back up, that appear in any videos on the channel. Just stay tuned to the end of the videos and you will see them credited.

She is fingering with the right hand and bowing with her dominant arm/ hand. The timing is really in the bowing hand and the fingering hand is very important of course but I am right handed and play a right handed fiddle. I could not even imagine ever playing the other way, guitar, fiddle, bass, no way. I am totally trained right handed since the 4th grade, and didn't start playing fiddle until I was in my early 30's, I was a string bass player starting in the 4th grade. I like to listen to the way she plays these fiddle tunes and get ideas for flatpicking guitar licks. It doesn't always work out but once I get the notes in my head I find a way to make it work. I have never played this style, just straight bluegrass which is slightly different. I'm in my early 60's now so I just play for fun and enjoy this version of Arkansas Traveler and also her version of Turkey in the Straw. Kind of transitioning over to Guitar for the future, but I still got my fiddle and bows... Good stuff!

I love this tune, and also play the fiddle well enough to know what you are doing, but not well enough to play it very clean. I'm thinking your G and D strings are tuned up to A and E. I'll try it.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've had your videos (especially this one) on repeat, either to learn to play tunes from, or as backround music while stidying for school etc. This set in particular is one to blame for sparking my love for fiddling when I started late 2019. It's been so great to finally meet and jam with some of these wonderful musicians in person over the past year or two, and I can't wait to keep learning!!

Absolutely love getting comments like yours, @allisonleroux763. The Joy of Fiddling channel has a lot of goals, but inspiring and educating are top of the list. On a personal note, it was because of this video I was introduced to (and enabled to learn) "Surveyor's Reel", which led me to the composer Andy De Jarlis, which led me to Métis style fiddling. Welcome to the fiddle family!
