Sorry to hear your engine has corrosion, but adding a copper tube in the exhaust will just increase the corrosion. Dissimilar metal corrosion is a killer on boats, maybe stainless steel might be better

Glad you've come over from the dark side 😅😅 (Bukh). j/k. There's alot to be said for the little Yanmar engines, I might be a bit biased as I have a 1GM10 in my boat (1980s model). They're as simple as an engine can be, really. Nothing fancy on them whatsoever! Parts especially are easy to come by anywhere in the world & there is a huge aftermarket industry too. The only downside is that Yanmar/Made in Japan is so bloody eye watering expensive lol. Lastly, PolyFlex here in Australia make EXCELLENT replacement mounts and more for the 1GM10 if you need them. Cheaper than Yanmar mounts too! Happy to see your boat really coming along too!

What a bargain!! And the return of a “Family Heirloom” look forward to the coming seasons. She is certainly a lady of a certain generation, much like my old Westerly Centaur, if memory serves those “pump” winches were a thing on most boats of that age and price point. Here we are 50yr later and with a clean and a dab of grease they will be just fine. Just watch your hands, they had a habit of nipping your little finger at the end of a stroke 😂 ATB from deepest Dorset 👍

Love your story. 3 boats though? That's being greedy lol. We only had 2 and one of them was the tender. Being serious for a bit it's not always so bad with the engine stuck. Especially with diesels they are the toughest engines ever made. Before buying a new one. (installation: aligning the shafts, getting the old one out and new one in), take the cylinder head off and have a look at the cylinder bore/bores. Ask someone, who isn't in the business of selling marine engines, for their opinion. You might be able to get it running again without having to take it out of the boat. Just drain the oil from the sump and the gearbox if there is one. Leave the fuel pump and high pressure pipes alone. Water is very unlikely to have gotten into fuel lines. Anyway you should not turn the engine in case it pulls water into the pump if the fuel tank is contaminated with salt water. Water from anywhere is certain death for the diesel fuel system as it is a very high precision mechanism. They are rather expensive to replace too. You have nothing to loose after all. Whatever you do I wish you the very best. John

@johnlanigan5532 hi thank you so much for taking the time to write this. So Matt pulled the head off and the cylinder wall had corrosion. Water had got down the pushrod chamber and on to the cam shaft. We also factored in how hard it is to get parts for Bukh engines these days. I know, 3 boats is crazy haha. We've been going round in circles as to which one we want to sell. Just can't decide! I think we will know once Tara goes back in the water. 🤞🤞

Hello from Sweden, I came across your channel becuase I am currently researching to take my day skipper theory, this Summer, my wife & I undertook a weeks sailing course with our local marina & one of the things I learnt was ; that the mainsail is the power source & that the foresail is for steerage. Love the personality & humility plus the tips so have subbed. Ian & Kiki. ps, 08:03 timestamp shows you wrapping your hand with the mainsheet, please lose the bad habit & not your fingers.

Love your videos. So great that you show the good bits and bad bits, and I just hope you're not hard on yourself, because you're inspiring many of us. Lots of times, you set up your "mistakes" in your narration, and when I see it, I always think, "God, good on you - I've done way worse than that!" I haven't done much racing to be fair - I'm more a "pottering about in boats" person, but fair play for giving it a crack. A few times in some videos, you've alluded to single-handing. If you want to, go for it. Almost all of my sailing has been single-handed, in a variety of old and cheap knackered old tubs on the Severn Estuary (home of the massive tides - 14m is a big one round these parts!), and it's been fine, day and night. I say fine, I mean I've amassed plenty of adventures and tales for the bar along the way, but I always think that's part of the point of it. Equally, lots of other people think I'm nuts for single-handing, so I guess it takes all sorts to make a world, as my Grandma used to say.
@donnasailing
@donnasailing Ай бұрын
@iangarforth you're definitely not nuts for single handing. I think it's good to have that independence as it's hard to enough having no control over the weather, let alone finding crew to be available when there is no weather. Thank you so much for your message. Yes I am hard on my self and my confidence knocks very easy, but I always manage to pull myself round and get back out as I just love sailing.

Great to see this. I recently did the online theory course and with the narrated learning through a screen found it very difficult to get my head round. I failed the exam twice and decided not to take the 3rd attempt. It would have been a lot better done in the classroom and I learn better in person and being able to ask why is that as I want to understand everything. I had booked already my practical day skipped with Sail Ionian in Greece and spoke to them re the theory and my struggles. They upon arrival in Greece were excellent and went through passage planning in detail so I fully understood everything and it was lovely just to ask a question which you don’t get online in the theory. I had a brilliant week in Greece and passed my day skipper course. Highly recommend anyone with some knowledge to give them a shout. 👍

Well done! You got out and back and enjoyed yourself. As others have said, keep the traveller locked off in the middle to simplify things a little bit and take away the risk of it slamming across if things get out of sequence. It's easy to get flustered when the wind gets up, and the sails start flapping like mad (from experience!). You'd probably find it easier to tack with a small headsail (I know you haven't got roller reefing). Otherwise, the touch on the tiller can make a difference - too slow or too fast will stall you, but get it just right and you may be able to tickle the boat around. Thanks for the candid video - it's interesting to watch.

Just found your channel. I have a slightly smaller boat. What type of boat is yours? Where is the marina that you sail from? I see you have moved the outboard engine to the transom - I agree with that! If you are going cruising I would recommend a furling jib - they're not awful for racing either because you're more likely to have the right sails up.

@spudflap
@spudflap 2 ай бұрын
Well done, main thing is you looked like you enjoyed it, and that's the most important bit. -More speed into the tack. Bear away a little before you tack to pick up speed if necessary. Without any headsail your boats ability to windward is compromised, so don't try pinching her too tight. --With more boat speed you'll need less rudder angle which in turn helps maintain momentum into the tack. -Don't faff with the traveller, just lock it off in the middle. Get your boat's angle and momentum right and you should barely need to touch the mainsheet. And she will be more responsive and easier to control with some headsail. But well done.
@donnasailing
@donnasailing 2 ай бұрын
@spudflap this is really helpful, I would never have thought in a million years to bear away a little first but it makes so much sense. Having more speed and taking this way would be much quicker and easier. I'm just making life harder for myself with the traveller too. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to write this. Yes I was really enjoying it, more so than the nerves I was feeling. Got myself a really thin small jib now so hopefully that puts an end to the jib/strong wind fear I've had so far.
