There are very few privately owned farms anymore. Most farms and farm land are owned by very large mega companies. There are government subsidies… I have NO sympathy for farming problems anymore. This isn’t the 1980’s.

Biden/Obama economy is showing us in real time that if there’s something that you absolutely must hide from a Democrat place it in or under an economics book! You’re guaranteed they’ll never go near it. They don’t understand the workings of a business (witness the $20/hour California fast food minimum wage debacle), and have no idea how to manage our national economy. All they know is taxing you to spend on their causes.

On the “Market” segment it’s my opinion that big money is what sets the price. Gambling on farmers lively hood. While farmers do all the work and investing. Not just money but hope for a better life and crop. There must be a way to break this cycle and give the farmers a break. And I’m not talking about money from DC.

Here in Oregon the recession started ago few months ago even if officials don`t want to admit it. Many hundreds of timber mill workers have been laid off due to several mill closures. Our primary Ag. crop here on the west side of the Cascades is grass seed & the resulting big bales of grass seed straw. The $$ for grass seed is much lower this year than in previous years. We know of a couple of farmers who are borrowing against farm equity to pay fuel, fertilizer & machinery tires/ parts costs.Thank goodness my cousin & I were able to close sale on a rental property we had in our family for > 55 years! If those lessees lose their jobs they would not be able to pay their leases & we could no intern pay the expenses of operating the Bldg. With Oregon`s restrictive laws we also could not evict them for non- payments of leases for at least 90 days. Bad enough to have no restrictions on govt. costs such as water/ sewer / prop. taxes but have a strict limits on annual lease rate increases of < than power & govt. utility costs. Right now the Dow is down 1,000+ points! Hold on tight everyone & hope you all are prepared.

Rising cost of manufacturing jobs? Relative to what? In 1997 they invented a narrative of “wage base competitive rates”. In reality it was a two tiered wage system for wage employees, but the cost of products to its customers never went down. Subsequently they went after salary pay scale and re-classified it so it took longer or almost impossible to reach top pay for labor grade performance, but the cost of its products to its customers never went down. Post ww2 farming trend graphs show up and down years in agriculture, this is the nature of the business. Layoffs in this business are normal, but what’s not healthy is moving manufacturing jobs out of the country.

Inflation over the past 20 years is horrible. I bought a new 3'x4'x8' hay baler for $68,000 in 2004. The same size baler this year is $220,000. Add the higher interest rates that we are paying for loans and it is difficult to imagine that any family farms will be able to survive unless there are serious changes in who is running our government.

John Deere deserve to go out of business, 5heir customer service is non existent and warranties on inferior not fit for purpose products criminally ignored. I’ll add their choice in agents around me is their biggest downfall. We’re all buying AGCO Fendt and Massey since BRANDT’s took over the local John Deere dealerships. BRANDT’s are a lying Canadian Corporate full of incompetent staff from the top down.
