Words: Charles Wesley, 1744 (Verses 1 & 4) Mark Hunt, 1978 (Verses 2 & 3) Music: “Hyfrydol” by R.H. Prichard [Key: Db] Verse 1 Come, Thou long expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art; Dear Desire of ev’ry nation, Joy of every longing heart. Verse 2 Joy to those who long to see Thee Day-spring from on high, appear. Come, Thou promised Rod of Jesse, Of Thy birth, we long to hear! O’er the hills the angels singing News, glad tidings of a birth; “Go to Him your praises bringing Christ the Lord has come to earth!” Verse 3 Come to earth to taste our sadness, He whose glories knew no end. By His life He brings us gladness, Our redeemer, Shepherd, Friend. Leaving riches without number, Born within a cattle stall; This the everlasting wonder, Christ was born the Lord of all. Verse 4 Born Thy people to deliver, Born a child, and yet a King, Born to reign in us for ever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal Spirit Rule in all our hearts alone; By Thine all-sufficient merit Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

Charles Wesley, an ordained Anglian priest and co- founder of the Methodist Church wrote this hymn in 1758. This hymn has been published in 771 hymnals

The hymn was written by an Anglian priest and one of the founders of the Methodist movement. Many of the hymns composed in English were done so by Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley. Their gifts of hymns are enjoyed in Roman Catholic and Protestant churches around the world. We give thanks Almighty God for the gifts hymns that inspire and strengthen our faith in your blessed son, our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you and the Holy spirit now and forever, Amen.

Why do the prots steal our Catholic hymns? Unbelievable
@okeyefuribe616427 күн бұрын
Dear @javageek123, I believe that we should emphasize ecumenism - the unity of the body of Christ, rather than emphasizing denominationalism which ends up dividing us. By the way, this hymn was written by Charles Wesley. He was not Catholic...🤔

Are you actually a fool or willfully one? The composer of this hymn was Charles Wesley (1707-1788), a member of the Church of England (Anglican). You Roman Catholics were still largely only chanting in Latin back in those days - do you not know your own church's liturgical history? Give us a damn break.

Anglicans use it too And it was written by WESLEY as I remember from my school hymn book. and it is therefore Non Conformist. Merhodist. I always think it sounds like a Welsh melody. Rousing and suitable for Advent

Gil wrote this piece for our graduating class. There are so many really bad performances out there on KZbin, but yours is faithful to exactly what Gil wrote and the way he intended it to be performed. It's a near perfect match. He also happened to be my best friend during college and after. It meant so much for this 78 yr. old man to hear this. There are no words to express the feeling we had as we sight-read a performance of this piece, not knowing what was coming next - no chance to look at the score. Gil's manuscript, in his most beautiful chirography, was stunning to look at and even more stunning to perform - 300 voices in a little chapel. The sound was so strong it was almost oppressive. Your sensitive and strong performance brought back the memories of that unforgettable moment. Thank you for hurting my heart in the best way possible. You, Mr. Yarborough, are a treasure. BTW, Gil wrote two pieces for me, one an organ meditation that incorporated both of the "Away in a manger" tunes, and a Lenten piece "At the cry of the first bird, they began to crucify him" - that was very powerful, and he wrote one for my father. They adored each other. His favorite hymn was Cym Rhonda and Gil's setting of "Guide me o thou great Jehovah" is truly fine also. (As he said to me, there really isn't much you can do with that tune!) Also, It's ironic that on this youtube page, one of the suggested videos is my performance of Handel's "Horse and the Rider" What a coincidence we both end up on the same page!

Believe it or not the first time I heard this was in church Catholic mass before mass started. I was so touched by it. I had to ask one of the church instructors to go ask the organist what the song was. It’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
