G’day. New to hunting here within the last 12 months or so. I’ve been on 5-6 hunts in the Ruahines so far and havnt seen anything yet. Maybe I need to head in deeper I guess? I seen you lads quite far in. Or is that the norm? Great video, and thanks for the explanation of the shooting up/down hill. Have had that issue before a few years back where I had a huge miss and had no idea why.
@Muzz308Ай бұрын
Hey mate, a big walk isn't always the norm but tops hunting over spring and summer is often a very good way of finding animals and getting to the tops requires a walk. River/slip hunting is another good way to locate animals, walk the river to a clearing/slip setup and wait out the evening, walk out in the dark or stay the night and watch it on first light as well.
@mattexnzАй бұрын
That’s awesome. Thanks for those tips. That gives me something to work on. Appreciate that greatly. I’ll see how we go. I havnt done an overnighter yet.

@tonystewart7287Ай бұрын
Good explanation on the LoS vs TBR, the other thing to remember is the bullet still travels 200m so that’s what you correct for the wind effect-125m for drop & 200m for wind drift

Great work boys absolutely right about taking hinds the mentality of shooting spikers as a meat animal never makes sense as unknown potential being snuffed out - ok to take a cull type stag of poor quality No market for feral ( or farm venison) makes WARO not very economical so the reality is search+destroy Long term a solution working with recreational hunters has to be the way forward BUT not just working with NZDA only/ select groups at the exclusion of others Yeah those long hauls back up with meat on board wishing there was a nice ice cold beer back on the ridge top!!!😵💫😉

Great video, been to a couple other Ruahine bivs, but Toka is still on the to do list. How would one find out more about the Ruahine Deer Working group? Like Yax I’m BOP based, I love hunting the Ruahine but it’s a long drive so want to keep up to date with what’s going on.
@Muzz308Ай бұрын
@@KawekaJC unsure how I got on the mailing list mate. Ruahine user group and Ruahine range hunters are good FB sites to keep up to date with.

@greghughson7450Ай бұрын
Nice one Muzz, good to see you’re still out and about 👍 Bugger about the planned cull but that’s a direct result of hunters not shooting hinds and focusing only on stags, part of it is access but it’s not the crux of the issue.
@Muzz308Ай бұрын
Yeah mate, they need knocking back, no doubt about that. Hopefully the "Ruahine Deer Working Group" comes up with something that can improve the situation for all involved. (haha)
@Motumatai3Ай бұрын
Access is the single biggest hurdle to getting recreational hunter buy in to managing deer numbers in the Ruahines. Heaps of deer there now, verging on what we hunted in the early 70's, but about 65% of the access we had in the early 70's has been frittered away by poor management by DoC and LINZ. Money spent on organising legal access is a one off cost, whereas heli shooting is a continual drain on DoC's operational budget...
@rossbagley2734Ай бұрын
Can't agree more! Getting landowners on board with "responsible" hunters is the key to making deer numbers manageable is key. Getting keen men and women into remote areas is workable. If landowners gave up the idea of "my land" "my deer" , the greater animal management could be better off for all. I recall in 90's and 2000's TB was the biggest problem now "TB" is no longer the issue! The push of TB is not the greatest issue until it happens again.

Awesome vid mate. Love the ballistic lesson. I hunt the ruahine…..did you day there is a helo cull in the new year…? I also understand there are a couple of 1080 drops on at present? Cheers Dave
@Muzz308Ай бұрын
Yeah mate, Had a email a few weeks back. Pretty much DOC is looking into how to increase WARO effectiveness and doing a DOC led aerial operation this summer. They also talk about NZDA led Management hunts, so that sounds great but leaves a lot of hunters out of the loop. They want to establish a Ruahine deer working group, once again sounds good but will see how that plays out and who is actually involved. Think the 1080 is further north but im not all over that.
@davidneal6920Ай бұрын
@@Muzz308 thanks mate. I am planning a fly in Nov north western ruahine. The chopper pilot warned me about the 1080 drop but said he will find out more and drop me where the 1080 ain’t. Good info about the WARO. Thanks
