Everything throughout history has been passed down through written documents, monuments, traditions and so on. One day there will be a time of reckoning for everybody, be it at the time of death or after depending on your world view. We’ll all find out. Though from a Christian perspective, we would hope nobody is in hell and would never want somebody to go to hell. It's both. First and foremost we are in relationship - it is free. But healthy relationship births actions. Paul writes we do not work for salvation, James writes faith without works is dead. Both are true and both sides of the same coin. Even Paul writes in Eph 3:10 that we are His workmanship created for good works.
