4:59 there is a term called universal design, I am not very much familiar with this thing but I have heard about it. What is your opinion on it ?
@simonhoffiz
@simonhoffiz 8 күн бұрын
Hey! Universal design is when the design is trying to be as usable as possible to everybody - including those with disabilities and postulates that a better design is achieved even for those that are not disabled. For example, a ramp is usually perceived to be only for people in wheelchairs, but in reality those that can walk can use them too and it makes for a gradual comfortable ascension. Also think about the door knobs - the turn knob vs the lever knob. Someone with disability in their hands can't use the turn knob, they need the lever knob. At the same time the lever knob also provides better grip for the non-disabled users. But the trade off are not universally adequate in all situations. For example, the ramp requires a lot more space than stairs and that might be an issue for a building. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other thoughts or questions.

Modern games have been designed to trap you for as long as possible because if you spend as much time playing their game then you cant be playing someone elses. But real life is mundane and dull. We play games to escape real life. Games were shorter with a definite end when i was young. Social media is same. These comments are designed to keep you on here longer. It sucks but its how rich people have designed the digital world. The rich have always manipulated.
@simonhoffiz
@simonhoffiz 17 күн бұрын
Yes, they have manipulated because in my opinion they have had control over the best influential tool to manipulate the masses: money. That is one of the points I am trying to share/explore with this video. Bitcoin proposes a sound monetary system that cannot be manipulated by a powerful few. This starts realigning human incentives to be more creative and provide higher value instead of trying to trap you or cheat you out of your money. I don't think games, social media or even the comments here are inherently bad, they are just a tool that are fined tuned to exploit us instead of enhanced us at the moment.

Yes, its detailing is not at professional level, since it was done by the architects and friends (which I did not mention in the video), but it adds to its organic feeling in a way. Building details are not standardized showing the human margin of error in their making, reflecting the direct human hand involved in its creation and adding the personal touch.

It already is a genre at this point with hundreds of games that have came out just in last 2 years. Bullet heaven has been used a lot recently to describe the genre. Horde defense, horde survival, roguelite survival, and reverse bullet hell are potential official names. It will start to be really interesting when this genre starts to blend with other genres. Horde royale? Bullet heaven platformer? Puzzle survival? There's a lot of potential.

I wouldn't say Vampire Surviors started a new genre/subgenre. There are tons of games with similar concept before VS's release. Enter the Gungeon, Boxhead, Realm of the Mad God, Synthetik, Crimsonland, and Magic Survival -- the game that inspired VS -- to name a few. Just none that made waves in the same manner as VS. Along with VS, the name of all the aforementioned games: top-down rogue-like sh'mups.
@simonhoffiz
@simonhoffiz Жыл бұрын
Yes, other games have preceded VS, but for some reason VS took the right component in their right state and mixed and balanced them in the right manner to become the success it is. So I would agree with you that VS didn't necessarily do anything completely new, but it was the most fine-tuned version of it (at least in theory) and that is usually how in the design world something becomes "THE" defining factor/iteration.

I thought this was going to be a bad video like many others... But you did a good job! The talk about the level design and about the end game screen was really good, especially the part about stats, I'm going to keep this in mind. The fault of the video was to not talk about how this looks like gambling machines hahaha
@simonhoffiz
@simonhoffiz Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I did opted to not talk about the gambling aspect too much, since a lot of the other videos make a big deal out of it and honestly, aside from the chest, I personally don't find a unique relationship between the gambling aspect and the rest of the game design. But interested to know if you do and where? Thanks for the feedback!

Problem with this new game genre. The new survivor type games never come out finished. Always undercooked. There like banking on you spending the 5 dollars to buy a game that will never finish. Some Examples.... halls or torment(unfinished) ... soulstone survivors (unfinished) not another zombi survival (unfinished) vampire survivors the only finished game.
@ulisesmarin9217
@ulisesmarin9217 Жыл бұрын
That's why all of the games you mentioned are labeled as "early access", VS also was launched in an "unfinished state". The 1.0 version was released last year in October and spent almost a year in the early access stage, also why you get upset over a 5 dollar game?
@exmello

Breakfast from McDonalds costs $10. A pack of butter is $7. What can you even buy under $5 these days? I've put 20 hours in Halls of Torment and 180 hours into Brotato. Who cares if they're ever "finished". All a final release does it make me come back once more in a year to enjoy new content on a game I've already gotten more than my money's worth.
@simonhoffiz

I do think that an unfinished game will not take you too far as a designer/developer but as a business model I think it is very helpful for indie developers to gain a share of the market to be able to develop the game. And the low price point is a very alluring selling point.

NGL I found the mistakes like calling it vampire "survival" and saying the clock counts down distracting. A large portion of the video felt like it was just describing the mechanics with minimal commentary on their effect. all that said, I really liked the comment about how the game's environment is made out of enemies more than it is landscaping. I had never put that together until just now. ...yeah, that's some good stuff. I'm gonna remember that.

Apologies for those mistakes. Both are errors of translation from my head to English. Will try to be better at capturing these errors in the future. Yes, I agree that this video is more of a holistic view of the design rather than a deep dive into specifics of the design, but that was my goal for this video. I am still trying to figure out the balance of how deep I should dive into any particular component of any of the designs I am exploring. Its good to know that you have an interest for the deep dives. If interested in this type of information, I try to tackle those in my shorts. If interested I would suggest subscribing to my channel so you get those shorts in your feed. Thanks for the feedback!
