Trzeba mieć odwagę, żeby opracować tę kolędę na orkiestrę i chór. Każda nowa instrumentacja będzie porównywana z wykonaniem przez Mazowsze sprzed kilkudziesięciu lat...

And while we’re on the subject of the NYO, I remember going to the Edinburgh festival and playing there in the Rehearsal Orchestra under Harry Legge (it was a mixture of talented youth and a few seasoned professionals who were very kindly gave us their time). It was then that I realized how good we were in the NYO. Despite being, many of us, very young, we already had enough experience of great conductors to have become a very good orchestra. I didn’t expect the Rehearsal Orchestra to be anything but just as good or better … but we weren’t. The NYO, in the 1960s, was a very good orchestra; children are capable of learning ensemble very quickly and very accurately; I’m willing to bet that the world’s leading quartets have within them many instrumentalists who learned their ensemble skills at a young age by suffering plenty of excoriations!

“Unto us …” is a very difficult chorus opening. Happily, a chorus of singers doesn’t have nightmares; that’s left to the choral director and conductor. That’s where you need tough taskmasters, like Pierre Boulez was, for instance. ‘We’ (in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO), that is) were generally treated quite charitably by the great conductors; but NOT by Boulez. He knew that our instrumental competence was not that far behind the professionals, but we needed that strict oversight in order to learn the ensemble skills that can only come from experience. He had a frighteningly acute ear for both pitch and rhythm and he could pick out mistakes made by poor individual suckers in the large NYO, who got excoriated in front of everyone. I suspect that, for career financial reasons, even the great and famous among conductors would not want to piss off individuals in the professional orchestras too often! But our NYO teachers loved seeing us being put through our paces by famous conductors because they knew how talented we were as individual instrumentalists; all we needed to learn was how to be stitched together properly.

Another wonderful Polish rendering of a choral classic. I group up with the elite of English private school general and music education, but 3/4 of my grandparents were pure blood Poles (the other 1/4, my paternal grandmother, was half Russian - whoops, nobody’s perfect!), so the quality of this musical performing makes me very proud indeed. Congratulations to you all!

“Comfort ye …” is a very difficult solo opening. When visiting my school, and rehearsing us for a section of the War Requiem, Peter Pears told me he knew more than one tenor who had nightmares over it!

The most brilliant interpretation of this wonderful composition I have ever heard! Flawless and performed as Holst would have himself as conductor. Nothing rushed! The camera work focused on the musicians, and that was also unusual and brilliant.

That technique, around 11:40, where he slides his hand down the fingerboard to produce a run of very short notes - does that have a name?
