How do you selected breed them
@NelsonJ14 күн бұрын
They are sold by many online nurseries. Selected for the nuts, but that doesn't mean they have good genetics. These "selected" plants aren't necessarily better growing trees.

Hello! Yes, typically you need a male for up to 6 or 7 females in the same area. Similar to the fuzzy kiwi which you could probably grow even better there.

pawpaw is not north americas largest fruit. as north america includes mexico and there is like 1-2 fruits bigger there. and before someone says central america.. that is part of north america, there are only 7 continents. arguably several types of avocado are also bigger. "from mexico" even though they were bred to be bigger in USA or other non verified areas.

Love your videos, very informative and educational. After almost seven years, we finally had two of our dozen or so trees "grown from seed" set fruit but unfortunately didn't make it to maturity. Hopefully, next year we may have home grown pawpaw to enjoy! Keep up the great videos...

I've planted Sasq, Shenan, Allegheny, IXL and Atwood last fall. Some from Cricket Hill and the rest from Edible Landscaping. All are doing great. I took off the shading at the start of summer just to see how susceptible they are to sunburn (some say I have to shade them, some say I don't). A couple of leaves here and there developed barely noticeable pale green/yellow spots, but no major damage to the foliage ever happened here in GA (hot, humid subtropics). And this season was hot and dry AF. I had to water them regularly. All 5 are doing well so far. Couple just started to yellow to go into dormancy. Allegheny being 5' tall set round (flower) buds already. I'm not expecting any fruit though, 'cause the other 4 are only 1-2 foot tall (no pollinator). I really wanna plant Rappahannock, 'cause the foliage horizontal to the ground looks soo cool.

not clearing your pallet? only 1 fruit per cultivar? I feel like theres such a variety of flavor profiles per fruit in just a single pawpaw patch that this experiment could be greatly improved by some water or something to eat in between, and maybe 3-4 fruits per type.

I enjoy your videos, I planned pawpaws, this is their second summer, I have been growing them under shade cloth, should I take the shade cloth off next spring or keep them growing under the shade cloth another year.. thanks
@permacultureninja20 күн бұрын
Typically, they’re fine in full sun the third year if well established. Be sure to mulch deep and wide. It’s more of a moisture issue than a sunlight issue.

The 18 inch deep air-prune bed is allowing at least as much taproot development as your 14 inch deep pots ;) I don't understand how you can say that the air-prune bed will dry out faster than the pots. You can just as easily set up air-prune beds in a shade house, they're nothing more than big pots.
@permacultureninja20 күн бұрын
The moisture that wicks up from the earth is a key part of my design to not have to water. I also have deep mulched woodchips on the floor of my shade house. An air bed is gonna dry out faster because it’s gonna have air underneath it. But to each his own, air pruned beds have lots of benefits. I just don’t want to have to water.

Bro, where can I get me some pawpaw seeds?
@wyzukee29 күн бұрын
They are very hard to propagate and need to be frost hardened and in a deep (greater then 16”) deep pot for their strong tap root. Even at that, they have low germination rates so just buy a young paw paw tree from a renowned grower like Stark Bro’s or other tree raising companies. Older mature trees don’t typically survive transplanting so that’s why I recommended buying a young start.

They've barely grown much so far...maybe a foot or three so far . Im worried they won't lignify enough to make it thru this winter (I'm in Spring Grove PA 6b) do they go dormant and if so could I maybe roll them into my shed and overwinter them til spring? TIA for your help.
