can this same univariate procedure be used to look for effect size and power with 2 groups (t-tests)?
@psychedvideos2852
@psychedvideos2852 7 ай бұрын
Yes, absolutely, but the effect size is given for eta squared, which is the same as r squared (so take the square root). This is with SPSS v.26. I think v.28 gives Cohen's d, but that's new. And also remember that the "power" given by SPSS is not the real power, but the observed power (which uses your observed effect size and sample size).

how do you do this if you do not have ht n, M or SD? is this a requirement in APA 7?
@psychedvideos2852
@psychedvideos2852 7 ай бұрын
It's not fully a requirement of APA, but it is proper practice when reporting results. The APA Publication Manual states that sufficient information should be given so that other researchers could derive effect sizes for meta-analysis or other purposes, if needed. Thus, having means, SD, and N is important even if it isn't required as a rule.

Hi, this was very helpful. Would I include the T value in the table or would I describe the T value in sentence format when I describe the table?
@psychedvideos2852
@psychedvideos2852 Жыл бұрын
Hi, that's a good question. Very often the t-test value is not included because the t is what gives you the significance but is not considered the same thing as (for example) the independent samples t-test. You can include the t value in the table if you prefer (or of the journal or professor wants it) but very often when I read published regression analyses there is no t-value included. The standardized beta weight is your effect size, and the p-value of course is important. If the sample size if very large, then you'll get a small p-value even when the standardized beta is trivial in magnitude. The combination of beta and p-value makes the t-value somewhat redundant. But as I said, you could include it if you like and it would not be wrong (just redundant).

Why don't you just export the table to Excel and edit it? This seems a rather more labour-intensive way of doing it.
@psychedvideos2852
@psychedvideos2852 Жыл бұрын
Two reasons: Excel can't do everything that SPSS can, and a person might be already analyzing data in SPSS so it is several steps to also set up the data in Excel and create the table. At some level this is merely personal preference.
@BaritoneLondon
@BaritoneLondon Жыл бұрын
@@psychedvideos2852 Thanks for the reply. I don't mean to do the analysis in Excell, I mean to export the table from SPSS as an xls file, open it in Excel and then re-format it to APA 7 style. The table can then be copied and pasted from Excell into Word. That is fewer steps than your method here because it does not require creating a new table.

dear prof, I want to test whether public exposure (IV2) to norm violations and relations with perpetrators (IV 1) of norm violations have an effect on observer vicarious embarrassment (VE). So there are two factors that cause VE, namely public exposure and relations with perpetrators of norm violations. Public exposure has two levels, namely (a) there is exposure and (b) there is no exposure/quiet. Level relationships: (a) Friends and (b) strangers. I'm planning to use a vignette to get the VE data. My question is: 1). Should the vignette show two directly interacting variables such as: "My friend (IV2) spoke loudly in the library and was seen by many people (IV1), how embarrassed are you for her actions?" or 2) vignette only contains information for each level independently. Examples in friendship relationships: My friend (IV1) spoke loudly in the library, how embarrassed are you for what he did?, Someone you don't know (IV1) spoke loudly in the library how embarrassed were you for what he did? I think that to get the main effect, the simulation is carried out per level, and then a statistical test of the interaction between IV1 and IV2 is carried out. Meanwhile, if the vignette contains two IVs that interact directly with each other, such as (friends x public exposure), (foreigners x public exposure), then this has directly tested the interaction effect so that the main effect for each IV is not obtained. Is my thinking correct? The analysis is repeated measures for 4 different conditions. thank you for your kindness.
@psychedvideos2852
@psychedvideos2852 Жыл бұрын
Good question. The study you describe is going to succeed or fail based on how well you write the vignettes. There is sort of an art to writing vignettes for experimental purposes in social psychology experiments. You want to give people enough information so they have something to base their judgements on, but at the same time you don't want to be overtly leading in the information. Each IV needs to have a vignette and all the information has the be identical except for the IVs (such as friend / stranger). Because you are setting up a 2x2 factorial ANOVA, you need a total of 4 vignette conditions: (friends/public), (friends/quiet), (stranger/public), and (stranger/quiet). When you write the vignettes, remember that you want enough information to inform the participants, but it also has to be ambiguous enough so that you can elicit their personal reactions without leading them to the answers you want. Hope that helps.

Good day, sir. Thank you for this video. But I have a question. If I have a previous table that already shows the M and SD of the variables, should I still write it again for this kind of table?
@psychedvideos2852
@psychedvideos2852 Жыл бұрын
You could repeat the information, or get rid of the previous table and build all the information into one table. The key to writing these tables is that it makes information easier to understand, so don't let the tables get overly cluttered. On the other hand, a manuscript with 20 tables is rather tedious to read when all the same information could have been built into 5 well-design tables. It's a bit of a judgment call on your part as to whether the two tables can be built into a single table, or whether you need 2 different tables. I would avoid repeating the information if I were creating the tables. You don't want them to be redundant.

Thank you for your video. The thing I am wondering is if you have an ABA design. When employing PND, would you include the scores in the withdrawal of the treatment as well and not just the treatment?
@psychedvideos2852
@psychedvideos2852 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I should create a new video for dealing with that. I haven't looked into this issue, but presumably you would want to treat the return to baseline as a totally separate phase for analytic purposes because you'd expect that there is some level of residual that persists after the removal of treatment so it isn't the same as baseline. For this reason, you should not treat the return to baseline as simply "more baseline". David Barlow has excellent texts on the topic, but they were published before some of these statistics were developed. Mind you, I'm not an expert in single case design methodologies but simply wanted to clarify some basics for testing simple designs. Historically these have been assessed in a non-statistical manner (i.e., visual assessment of graphs), and the various statistical approaches are fairly new (within the last 10-20 years). By way of comparison, Gossett devised the t-test in 1908, and by that time Pearson had been using the correlation for about 10 years (having adopted/stolen it from his mentor Francis Galton in the 1890s)

Hello. If the baseline has an uneven number of data points and the mid-line goes right through one of the data points, do you ignore that data point when calculating the mid-rate? In other words, if you have 7 datapoints for baseline, do you ignore the 4th point when calculating the mid-rate for either the bottom or upper half of the baseline?
