Reminds me of the tales my dad told me, growing up on an estate farm, managed by my grandfather That was in Norfolk UK where brick and flint buildings dominated the landscape Thank you for sharing the film Geoff

That’s exactly how my grandad and great-grandad worked in the 1920s and 1930s. Everything was horse power with very long days in favourable weather. I’m not sure when great-grandad bought his first tractor but it would have been post-war when the number of farm labourers decreased considerably.

Good film, fair commentary and good choice of music - but poor choice of volume setting!

Did my share of haymaking as a teenager in the 1950s, bloody hard work and you had to know how to pace yourself to last a long day but you certainly slept well that night.

Yes hard work, I used to think after only one day I'd never make the next day, but soon got the hang of it , The best part for me was getting the last load in before the pub shut, for that well deserved pint, oh how i miss those happy days

I was lucky to experience pubs when pubs were pubs , didn’t do me any harm . Well , I became a raging alcoholic and have COPD , but still consider myself fortunate to have grown up in the 70s and 80s

I despise the combines we use now, one can always see chopped body parts of Fawns and ground dwelling birds, my dog is a scavenger so she shows me.....I remember using an old swan necked scythe in the 1980's to clear the footpaths, so relaxing and not hard work as they were well balanced tools.

Yeah try doing a few hundred or even thousand acres with a sythe before the weather breaks and see how relaxing it is. Stressful enough with a combine.

@@hugoagogo9435I worked with both and the combine is the tool to make progress..the sythe has its place but not on a modern farm no more.😊

The Art Deco pub at 5:40 is "The Comet", in Hatfield. It's near the De Havilland factory, hence the name. It's still there.

This is a typical May Day garland festival once found all over England - bringing in the green and decorating the town with it, night and day songs raising the maypole etc. But with the addition of a hobby-horse that evidence suggests once paraded at Christmas (like most hobby-horses did and still do in some areas). Talk of pagan 'Celtic' Beltane origins are unfounded.

How I wish I could have been born in the 1940s instead of in the 1960s, and also I would have been more at ease and had better luck getting a job unlike when I left school in the 1980s when there were more people in the world than there were jobs.

My great great grandfather's family were Wiltshire farm labourers back then; he took advantage of railway work around the time Box Tunnel was built and lived with his wife for some time after in a navvies' shanty town with a formal name, quite established, beside the GWR line,- all now long long gone but evident from maps of the time. Free housing, likely, of a temporary nature with privations.

I remember that law used to say all pubs had to have frosted windows to prevent minors looking in and seeing adults get drunk. Not so now it seems.

Aye it were just grand, I’d be up at four int morning getting coal fire started. It were hard life back then, but we were a happy and cheerful lot. Working sixteen hours a day, six days a week , fifty two weeks a year. I always looked forward to my bread and cheese, when I got home from work at eleven pm each night. Aye it were just grand.

Remember when this program was made, they actually thought smoking and drinking was good for you. just like the twits taking drugs today. Yes, most have the carvings have a religious meaning the most importing that you are going to meet your maker sooner than you think if you keep smoking and drinking hard and fast.

The banning of Cigarette Ads really worked on the fruitcakes commenting herein. A social drink is fine, however, there is no such thing as a social coffin nail for 5he smoker or the people breathing in the rotten second hand smoke. The stench it leaves on everyone’s hair and cloths. Arriving home you gave the excuse that you had to work late, the wife thought to herself what a stupid git!

Interesting that some commenters here are bemoaning the loss of their country, whatever that means. Pubs still exist and you can still drink in them. My village has two that are five and six hundred years old. I suspect what the commenters really mean is that there are no black or brown faces in the pubs shown in this film. In other words, racism pure and simple.
