Yes and no. Compost does get really hot, but it is also quite humid to just randomly combust...buuut it does releases chemicals that are highly flamabe. I would simply be careful about what I bring near it or hit near it.

Compost that is really really dry and moldy can build up pockets of methane and ignite from the heat. If you turn compost once a week and add water while you do it won't ignite. It's not just compost. Anything that molds can start a fire if it doesn't have enough airflow. Turn your compost, hay, and other organics every other week to make it unlikely.

Wow this is literally me in terms of being in PE in my senior year and surrounded by younger classmates, except for me 1. It was due to a misunderstanding, I was told if I took ROTC I didn't have to take PE so sicne I'd never done ROTC before I did that, and come to find out it actually didn't count and I needed to take PE, and 2. I didn't get adopted by anyone, I was bullied by all the younger kids

Back in primary school we had a playground where part of it was covered with bark chippings. And every now and then it had to be replaced and what often happened is they first brought the clippings and made one large pile of it which laid there for a couple of days before spreading it out. Some times you could see the water vapor coming of from these piles. Was safe though. No fires ever happened

The heat comes from the composting process and lot of air in the mixture can accelerate the process. Not only that but air pockets work as insulator so the heat is contained and will build up. Thats why things like grass and mulch are a risk because their structure practically guarantees a lot of air. You can prevent combustion by regularly mixing / aerating the pile and keeping it moist.

When I was 11 I woke up to my back yard on fire because of this and I thought I was dreaming so I just watched for a few minutes until I heard my mom scream. Everybody was okay and we were able to get the fire out but I don’t recall the scorch marks on the tree ever going away.
