You don't promote growth in your people by micromanaging them. It is unfair to them and eventually they will quit trying because they know someone (you) will tell them what to do and how to do it.

@@billyruhland3029 You’re right on target. Micromanagement is a great way to suck the motivation out of people. It seems to me there are two reasons people are micromanagers. They’re either afraid their people will fail, and it will make them look bad. Or, they’re afraid their people will succeed, and it will make them look bad.

I could not agree more. Leadership and management are two very different things. Personally, management simply keeps you sailing on an even keel, maintaining a level trajectory in a stable, balanced manner - maintaining the status quo. Leadership prepares where that ship sails, prepares the ship to sail faster, prepares how they face change (do they fear change, manage change or do they engage and help steer change) through excellent communication and listening skills. Without leadership, the ship is simply managed and the trajectory of the ship does nothing more than move the ship front point A to point B and likely back to point A. Management is important, don't get me wrong, but it usually doesn't lead to the next level. Like you, I believe a leadership component is essential in addition to good management. Good management prevents destructive chaos; Good leadership provides constructive chaos. You have to fail sometimes in order to grow and succeed with your goals, which means at times it could be constructive chaos that leads you to the next level.

Leadership sets the sails toward change...I like that idea. I'll be speaking on the topic of differentiating leadership from management at the Johnson College of Business at #TennesseeTech on October 31st.

Another great addition to the channel. Really thought provoking questions about leadership. Also think you have a winner with the theme that you have to know how to lead yourself before you lead others.

The vital thing about trust in teams is that it has to start with the leader trusting those we leader. It's a two-way street, but we, as leaders, have to be the ones who initiate it. That means we've got to delegate and trust our people to accomplish what they are there to accomplish. It means letting go of a need to micromanage. So many people in leadership positions fail as leaders because they don't trust the people they are supposed to be leading.

I love this message. How would you recommend putting it into practice in the divisive nature of leadership seen in most companies today?
@TheScienceofLeadership
@TheScienceofLeadership Ай бұрын
According to General Perna, the way to do it is to "let go of your ego and focus on your purpose." There are two critical issues there, and perhaps they are in reverse order. The first is know your purpose. What are you about? Why are you really here, from a big-picture perspective that surpasses the given position or moment in which you find yourself. Figure that out first because it is your North Star. The second thing is having the humility to let go of being the one who gets the credit. There's an interesting paradox with credit. The more you give it away to others, the more it is reflected back on you. The more you try to grab it for yourself, the more you lose it.

That may be why the current half-life of current S&P 500 companies is less than 15 years; meaning, half of those companies won't be in the group 15 years from now. As the leadership goes, so goes the organization.

Absolutely! I would rather keep a space open for a member who fits our mission, vision and values than fill a position with someone who doesn’t align and drags the team down. In my experience, the malcontent drives good team members away (temporarily or worse permanently)while you are attempted to jettison them. Keep the spot in the bench open for someone who fits

Among 51 Four-Stars I interviewed, the most commonly cited "leadership lesson I learned the hard way" was waiting too long to remove someone from a position. As leaders, we have to be able to maintain the larger perspective and also be able to make the tough calls on those situations. If not, it jeopardizes everything we are trying to accomplish.
