It's actually negative, positive lightning often has its thunder to be more powerful than negative one, often resemblance of an bomb explosion

@@TStormGuy since both of them had a crackle like thunder, it had to have some branching. But a positive CG is smooth channel lightning, with no branching at all, and the thunder that follows, will sound like a bomb of some sort, one of my videos, I had close encounters with CG lightning strikes

I feel like they're both negative, but with different amperage. The last one definitely seems more powerful than the first one, despite de distance.

Hmmm. Could be. Meteologix captured it as a positive CG, but I honestly have zero idea how precise their data are.
@thelightninghunter23
@thelightninghunter23 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that they both sound like -CGs... the first one had at least 2 terminations and second one was likely stronger. It's interesting if LLN data captured one as positive. Vaisala's networks don't really confuse polarity... however they often misclassify cloud vs. CG flashes. I'm guessing it identified the second one as +CG? I'd think that it either misclassified a cloud pulse as CG or maybe the flash produced both positive and negative strokes... or maybe it really was a +CG that sounded negative. Buildings may cause weird effects with the sound sometimes. --Chris

@@TStormGuy From my personal experience: not accurate at all ;) 9 years ago there was a storm that produced 5 powerful close strikes, with the first being the closest at about 150-300 meters distance. Did a damage-survey in the neighbourhood (but found nothing) and than turned to Meteologix, which listed a strike like a kilometer at closest while they definitely were closer than that.

These are definitely -CG? Some of them sound on the cusp of being positive. That said, is there a specific kA where lightning is considered to be positively charged? :)
@Tstorms
@Tstorms 7 ай бұрын
There's no specific kA, individual strokes are either positive or negative and either can have high or low peak current (although +CGs are slightly more likely to be higher current). Both 100kA negative strokes and 10kA positive strokes are possible!
@wildguy4773
@wildguy4773 2 ай бұрын
Its really just close. Positive charges have their "crack" sounds more distinctive even tough strike was generally far, kinda like a bomb explosion than your typical lighting, these had distinctive thunder we hear just being close, regardless if you hear cracking in thunder even if its far away from striking, its likely positive cg
