So darn beautiful, have you ever thought about a stealth camping night around there? Love the video :)
@Data_on_trailКүн бұрын
Yes, I have thought about that. Not sure if it's legal and it is not as isolated as it looks on the video, like an oasis is a set of dense suburbs. If I ever do camp there - it will show up on this channel ;-)

Pennsylvania was harder on my feet than Maine. You might like the Speedgoats more because of river crossings. I used Altra Lone Peaks and wore them in the water. After I flipped back Southbound I used Gortex Keen mids because I had snow. My new favorite is Altra Olympus . Using them on the PCT this April. Best of luck with your hike.

It's good to get out and get acclimated to the weather. I was told by an old timer that the best way to prepare for the hike is to strap on a pack and go. Can't swear to it myself. I hike in Florida and here the weather changes every 30 minutes so you have to be flexible.

I completely agree. I'm hoping my practice hikes in sub 20 degree Midwest weather get me conditioned to hit the AT in March...but we'll see.

As far as your selection of clothing, the way I look at it, I'm carrying what I think will work, and I'm going to wait and see what does or doesnt once I get out there. I can always send things home or pick up what does work from outfitters along the way. No need to switch out too much until you actually get out there and see what works and what doesn't. Someone else may have different ideas, or be more experienced, but they aren't you.
@Data_on_trail5 күн бұрын
You are very right about all of that, especially the adapting as I go part. Still workin on that...

Its good you have Mrs. Data at home as support! I recruited my neice to be my support crew. Im sure there may be lots of gear changes early on, especially as seasons change.

@Data_on_trail it's so important to have that and it's not an easy job i am sure. They have to take care of so much while their hiker is on trail, and they dont ways get the recognition they deserve.

Neat looking trail. Stay safe, keep spray or air horn with you to ward off animals if you need it.
@Data_on_trail5 күн бұрын
Thanks for the tip! Animals in these Forest Preserve are wary of humans and most the area is easier for them to access than is it for hikers. I sometimes get to see the tail end of some deer.

Animal trails become people trails and eventually roads in some cases. A lot might of been from the clean up crew but a couple looked to me like Rabbit trails.
@Data_on_trail6 күн бұрын
You are right about all of that. At least this area is in one of several forest preserves we have the Western Suburbs along the Fox River - so these trails won't become roads, at least.

The cold is why i am opting to start at th 4:40 e beginning of april instead of in march in mid VA. I do fi e down to mid 20s, but below that i start to suffer.
@Data_on_trail8 күн бұрын
My start date on the first week in March is also weather dependent. "How much" it's weather dependent I don't know yet. I'll be going on (and sometimes vlogging) several cold weather hikes to figure out my lower temp limits - and I may adjust my start date based on those hikes.
@jsweevil8 күн бұрын
@Data_on_trail I know it's still possible for higher elevations to get snow at certain times in March or April, but once you get to the end of March beginning of April, it is more moderate with much less chance of snow. Higher elevations are always a roll of the dice though.

I can see how it sounds like a lot with all the options I shared in this video. In practice, I usually just to the 6 stake out version, which for me, is a lot less work that the dome I used to carry - and lighter. I thought about a hammock, but it just didn't work for me. I spent about 1/2 my nights on the AT in a shelter instead of a tent as well, but I hear ya. It does take me a minute to setup the Duston. Hope to see ya out there as well. Happy Trails!

Sounds a lot like my story. Im a woman in my early 60s who has been dreaming of hiking the trail for over 50 years since my brother and i took a wrong turn while camping in the Shenandoahs at Big Meadows in the eary 70s. Ended up on the AT and it got in my head and refused to leave. We were tracked down by park rangers as we were trying to find the end of the trail. Ive been wanting to find the end of the trail ever since. I lost my husband of 35 years in 2020 to colon cancer and promised him i would attempt to hike the AT and carry him with me. I told him i would take on the trail name Jimni, short for Jim and I as Jim was his name. Ive been living in my minivan for the past year, working and saving money for hiking the AT in 2025. Im starting in Virginia and heading NOBO and hopefully will finish SOBO at Springer. Maybe our paths will cross at some point, but im also an introvert and plan to stick to my own pace and plans. Either way, whether i meet you out there at some point or dont, i wish you all the luck in making it to the end!
@Data_on_trail16 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing all of that. I was pleasantly surprised when I start section hiking the AT in 2024 at how many folks in our age range were out on trail. I also met so many kind and friendly folks I kinda got addict to the positive vibes. I be carrying Data avatar with me on trail, in case you see him - you'll know that's me. Hopefully, our paths may cross.

@Data_on_trail i went way out of my comfort zone and attended the End of Days Hike loosely organized by Ramdino and Fresh Ground at the Foothills Trail in SC. I am usually a solo hiker who avoids crowds, but I met lots of thru hikers and quite a few triple crowners, and ever single one of them were genuine, supportive, and encouraging to prospective thru hikers. They were all open to questions and giving suggestions to help me out. The hiking community has to be the best community out there. I will definitely look for Data on trail and I'll introduce myself if I see you. If not, good luck with your hike!

Durston makes a great tent. I got one of the 1st X mid 1's that came out on the market. It's for the times I have to use a tent. Considering I like it is unusual because if I could 100% of my camping would be with a Jungle Hammock. Jungle Hammocks have been my choice since 1957 when I traded my tent to a buddy for his hammock on a camping trip. He disliked his hammock and I had the same feeling about my tent , we both were happy for the rest of the trip.

Hot Dam , Someone who will actually show us the trail and not a picture of themselves with only short bursts of the actual trail. So many photograph themselves all the time so you have to look past or around there faces to see any form of woods or trail. As you might know by now I like to see the trial and not some person mugging it up all the time in front of the camera. Actual video of the trail is a great pre hike reference item for anyone wanting to do the AT , whole or sections , I like sections. I will be watching and have signed on ( video wise ) with you.

Well, not exactly tennis shoes. A lot of hikers wear shoes called trail runners. That's what I wear now. I was surprised at how well they worked. Currently, I hike in type called Hoka Speedgoat 5s and I've not yet had a blister. Not one.
