You could probably find one of those day courses in blacksmithing that gives you a try, but it depends where you live. I'm actually looking to get into blacksmithing, I've found my own blacksmith to teach me :D

Oh, by 'these things' I just meant blacksmithing. Call me naive, but I didn't know it was still practiced, and I'd LOVE to try it. I'm into any kind of art and I think it would be endless fun to be able to do something like this. Oh, I see. I know, it's such an anticlimax. It was looking more and more awesome and just at the crescendo... it turned out to be a tacky snail that looks like it belongs alongside gnomes in a mad person's garden.

It doesn't have to be. I contacted a local blacksmith and went to meet him. half an hour later and he offered that I come over on Saturdays and work with him and he'll get me on the forge straight away. It is also very likely that I'll be getting an apprenticeship in welding. I didn't apply through some government scheme, I went and contacted a metal working co. It's only dying because not enough people have motivation to seek opportunities and the modern world only applies for jobs it sees.
