Associating women’s empowerment with nature conservation (or climate change mitigation) is much more than a wonderful idea; it’s the acknowledgment that our societies have gone too far, for too long, in a patriarchal way. This approach has ultimately led us to the current global situation, where all kinds of environmental indicators are disheartening. Supporting the feminine force in this world is a real contribution to sustainable living. And it’s not only about women; it’s also about the feminine aspects within every man. As a conservationist, I believe that balancing the feminine and masculine forces is imperative to save us from a tragic destiny. The problem isn’t the lack of awareness; the problem is that we all see the system as too powerful to change. We feel helpless. And yes, after trying so hard with little success, I also felt helpless. But… this time! When I was with the women guides in my Gushaini office, early in the morning, for the last women-led trek departure, I finally experienced the meaning of women’s empowerment. We were friends, colleagues, proud members of a trekking company. Despite last-minute issues, they were confident, joyful, proud, and real change-makers. They are not only trek leaders; they are leaders of change in their very conservative, patriarchal, and caste-dominated society. Thank you so much to the team of Himalayan Ecotourism, particularly Prachiti, who played a crucial role in this effort, and also Nandini, Sonali, and even Keshav, who happily shared his knowledge and experience with the women. And of course, thank you, Shivya. You have brilliantly brought this to the world through this video. I don’t know how you did it, but this video captures so well what it’s all about. We can all feel that positive energy while watching the documentary. Yes, I hope this will reach where it needs to and inspire other women and organizations. Thank you very much, and I am looking forward to undertaking more similar projects with you 🙂 Stephan
