The trick is to be alone in a crowded room. To hear silence in the noise. Peace in the chaos. I have a gf, yet I love solutiude. It's sometimes challenging to wake up when you live with your partner. Any movement away from 'what is' ( like boredom, loneliness, anxiety, fear, sorrow,etc) is a tremendous wastage of energy; including the idea of transforming it, getting rid of it, arriving at its opposite, etc. When all this energy, which is otherwise wasted, is gathered --- every particle of it --- then there is a possibility of this gathered energy to explode or rather implode as we are talking in psychological terms. To let this gathered energy to act upon 'what is' --- not the energy of thought with its limited knowledge and memory --- is the essence of meditation. Not the practicing a system day after day. All this requires a tremendous lot of observation, alertness, subtelity and swiftness of mind and heart. There is not the duality of teacher-disciple duo but only an act of learning in which there is no recording/accumulation.

The question is how can we in this materialistic world balance love with this pursuit ?

Sure we have a plan let's run the entire grid off of coal-fired power plants. We could also use natural gas-fired power plants. And let's not forget the oil powered power plants. Or how about all of the nuclear plants that make nuclear waste? And I know what you're thinking maybe we could use solar right? Well solar panels are actually made of coal.
