What year did this come out? Because this is fairly impressive CGI.

The sad thing about series 8 is they really did put effort in, as this clip shows. It must have taken Danny a while to rehearse this, and while it looks dated now that CGI sequence would not have been cheap. It's genuinely an ambitious idea... But like a lot of series 8, the finished product... Well, it's just shit isn't it? They tried to broaden the series so much that it upended what Red Dwarf was all about, and left the existing fans cold and any new fans with a third rate sitcom that was hard to get invested into. This sequence isn't the worst offender but it's definitely a good example of series 8's problems. People can hate on 10, 11, 12 all they like, but the show has never dipped back down to this sort of level.
@doctorwhat3683 Жыл бұрын
I agree with this almost entirely. I do enjoy watching a lot of Season 8 but i know full well that it’s Red Dwarf as its absolute lowest, mainly because it just doesn’t feel like Red Dwarf. I’ll never understand why they decided to go so silly with it, I’ll never understand why they threw all of them in prison… a lot of the creative decisions were just baffling. It’s entertaining, but it’s far from good.

Love Danny's dancing but this really encapsulates everything that was wrong with VIII. Too much CGI and pointlessly long mediocre gags, not enough of the good character moments that we got with the earlier seasons. Thankfully the latest Dave special seems to have sorted that out for the most part.

This is embarrassing to watch. One of those that should never have got off the storyboard, let alone dominate the episode with a big overblown use of the effects budget on an unfunny, overlong and childish sight gag. (Oh well, typical series VIII eh?) Danny (who's dance abilities were surprisingly underused in Red Dwarf as a whole- love his slinking around in S1 though!) should have been given a better platform than this in the show to showcase his fearsome talent.
@EleventhFloorBelfry7 жыл бұрын
See, I thought that at first - I enjoyed it as a kid, and then I grew up some and saw the cringe-filled aspects of this. But I think the air they were going for was over-the-top and surreal, given it's all just a simulation and they can do anything they want, so the goofiness kind of fits, even all the way down to his cigar at the end.
@hwren98454 жыл бұрын
@@sadako24 Yep. Idk if you've seen the Dave series but, while they're definitely an improvement on series 8 imo, they still lean too heavily on fanservice for my liking. With a built-in loyal fanbase they don't need to ply us with constant, clunky references; we're still going to watch!

Love this clip. Have watched all of the Dwarf episodes on box-set many times over,never tire of them, but I come back to this one time and again. And for those that doubt his ability - Danny was a professional dancer long before he found fame as the Cat, appeared in many West-End shows. A very talented performer.

Danny John-Jules was a professional dancer, on a similar note the male Holly (Norman Lovett) was a stand-up comic Lister (Craig Charles) was a performance poet, Rimmer (Chris Barrie) was the only professional actor of the original 4 characters
@TerryTheNewsGirl Жыл бұрын
Actually Barrie was a stand-up impressionist before Spittinh image (again as an inpressionist) then Red Dwarf, then he did acting (Britas, Prince Among Men, etc)
