The tailpiece is what’s known as a “scratch-thread tailpiece”, and it uses very fine threads that screw into the bottom of the pop-up assembly. Using tools like pliers is not recommended because it can damage the shape of the tailpiece and cause leaks. The best method is to put the thread seal tape on the threads, then screw it in as tight as it will go by hand. Dry your hands thoroughly first to get a better grip. If you want to use a strap wrench just to be sure, that’s fine, but don’t overtighten it. In regard to leaks, there’s no pressure on that section of the drainage piping unless the waste line is clogged, in which case you have bigger problems. ;D

In short, the original Temptrol diverter was designed for tub and shower only-that's all. The new VersaFlex diverter can handle the combination of ANY two functions - shower, hand shower, or tub spout. So, that means you can install a showerhead and a hand shower, or a tub and a hand shower, or even two showerheads! Also, areas with very hard water could affect the function of the old design. So, we upped our diverter game by giving the VersaFlex a super-reliable ceramic cartridge to handle any water conditions without leaking or seizing.

We always recommend reading the product documentation before you start. All Symmons Temptrol valves and trims include installation guides with measurements and recommendations for each specific product. In this case, the rough-in dimension for most of the trims we offer is 2-3/8” with a +/- of ½".

No, you don’t need to turn the water off when you’re installing the drain assembly--just be sure you don’t accidentally turn the faucet on until you’re done or you’re gonna get wet. An old trick is to throw a towel over the faucet to remind yourself not to turn it on.
